“Brown study”是什么意思呢，难道学习还有颜色之分？

brown在英语中最早的意思是“gloomy暗的、阴郁的”。由此，形成了一种悲观或严肃的感觉。而study除了表示学习，也指幻想、沉思，后来慢慢的brown study就用来指因为思考的太深入而出神、忧郁的状态，意思是苦思冥想、出神、放空。

例：I tried to attract his attention, but he was in a brown study.

我企图引起他的注意，但他在沉思而无所觉。

brown-nose

brown-nose是“阿谀奉承”的意思，尤其用于下级对上级，相当于俗语中的“拍马屁”、“马屁精”之意。下次如果见到有人对上司拍马屁，就可以说：He's brown-nosing. 当然，这里是朋友间开玩笑的话。
