这个引喻来自纸牌赌博，我们知道，赌徒们总是玩兴很大，挑灯夜战为家常便饭，这句话的意思是玩牌赢的钱还不够买蜡烛，也就是说是赔本的买卖，自然“得不偿失"，"不值得做"了。了解了它的来源后，有一点需要提醒，这个句子只用否定形式，一般不说 the game is worth the candle。有时也使用它的问句形式：

said when you are not certain if it is really worth making a great effort to get something

这值得吗?(当不确定是否值得做某事时说的话)
