这句短语原是音乐用语，指某人仅凭听过的记忆就可弹奏乐曲。由此意引申出来后，"play by ear"强调事件的“即兴”成分，没有计划、依据当时情况而行事(to let things go as they may)，很有“边走边看吧，走着瞧，随机应变”的味道。

上边那个短语偏向于“看着办”中的边看边干，而这个说法就侧重于“你自己说的算”，你看着办，你说怎么办就怎么办。当别人问你意见或者决定，而你没有时间决定，你就可以交给对方，让他看着办吧。

“改天吧”经常出现在懒人或大忙人的口中，相当于英语中的"rain check"。该短语来源于美国的棒球文化，如果球赛进行时因为大雨不得不暂停，观众可领“雨票”，或用原票存根作为“雨票”(rain check)，球赛改期举行时可凭之入场。
