“raise hell”是“升起地狱”?别闹了，还是说点儿现实的吧

英语表达中

经常有些短语或词组很令人费解

看字面意思根本不知道它想表达什么

也难怪经常会闹笑话了

这也是英语学习中比较有难度的部分

毕竟我们没有相应的语言环境

只能靠慢慢积累，降低错误率了

今天就来分享几个“藏”得很深的短语

go up in smoke

泡汤

“泡汤”意思是“计划等失败、中途天折”

英语中用go up in smoke来表示

Because of the heavy rain,our plan of going out went up in smoke.

因为大雨，我们的出行计划泡汤了。

I was afraid you'd say no, and my dream would go up in smoke.

我担心你会说不，那我的梦想就化为泡影了。

如果是钱或投资“泡汤”，其实就是钱被白白浪费了

可以用go down the drain来表示

比如：

All of my money went down the drain.

我的钱都泡汤了。

All our efforts go down the drain because of negligence.

因为疏忽，我们的一切努力前功尽弃。

out of sorts

闹情绪

不应该一看到“情绪”就想用emotion

“闹情绪”实际是“闷闷不乐的，不满的”

可以用out of sorts表示

Nobody would bother Bob when he's out of sorts.

鲍勃闹情绪的时候没人会去烦他。

A:Why is Jane out of sorts?

简闹什么情绪呢?

B:She quarrelled with her boyfriend.

她和男朋友吵架了。

“闹情绪”还可以表达为in low spirits

Friends are those who encourage us when we are in low spirits.

闹翻天

“闹翻天”不是真的把天翻过来，而是形容人吵闹不停

其英文表达是raise hell

Mary always raises hell when she gets angry.

玛丽生起气来总要闹翻天。

B:Did she quarrelled with her husband again?

其中的rumpus意为“吵闹”

闹别扭

“闹别扭”的意思就是“彼此有意见”，可用be at odds表示

Mary is at odds with her boyfriend now.

玛丽现在正和男朋友闹别扭。

A:I'm at odds with Tom again.

我又和汤姆闹别扭了。

B:Oh,for what?

哦，为什么啊?

人们在闹别扭时常说的话有：

take it/sth.out on...

拿…出气

“拿…出气”的意思就是“向某人发泄”

在英语中可以用take it/sth.out on...来表示

Jack took his anger out on his dog.

杰克拿自己的狗出气。

你少命令我!

B:Hey,I know you're in blue.But there's no need to take it out on me.

嘿，我知道你郁闷。那也没必要拿我出气啊。

“拿…出气”还可以说成vent one's anger on sb.
