当表示运动方向的副词或地点状语放在句子开头的时候，整个句子一般是需要完全倒装的。比如：Nearby were two canoes in which they had come to the island./In front ofthe house stopped a police car.

如果直接引语放在句子开头，这种情况下，可以倒装也可以不倒装。比如："What does it mean?"asked the boy或the boy asked都可以。此外，要注意，完全倒装结构通常只用与一般现在时和一般过去时。
