10 CHILDREN	十孩子们

Come to me, O ye children !	到我这儿来吧，孩子们!
For I hear you at your play,	我听见你们在嬉闹，
And the questions that perplexed me	那些使我烦恼的问题
Have vanished quite away.	顿时云散烟消。
Ye open the eastern windows,	你们打开东面的窗户吧，
That look towards the sun,	朝向升起的太阳，
Where thoughts are singing swallows	那儿，思念是呢喃的燕子，
And the brooks of morning run.	早晨的溪水流淌。
In your hearts are the birds and the sunshine,	你们的心中有小鸟阳光，
In your thoughts the brooklet's flow,	思绪里有溪水流泻，
But in mine is the wind of Autumn	我的头脑里却只有秋风，
And the first fall of the snow.	加上初降的霜雪。
Ah! what would the world be to us	啊!世界会变成什么样，
If the children were no more?	如果没有了新一代?
We should dread the desert behind us	我们会害怕身后的荒漠——
Worse than the dark before	比面前的黑暗更厉害。
What the leaves are to the forest,	正如树叶把阳光和空气
With light and air for food,	当养料给森林带来，
Ere their sweet and tender juices	树叶甜嫩的汁液还没有
Have been hardened into wood, -----	化为坚硬的木材，——
That to the world are children;	儿童对世界也是这样;
Through them it feels the glow	世界凭儿童而感受
Of a brighter and sunnier climate	比树干感受的气候更加
Than reaches the trunks below.	明亮灿烂的光流。
Come to me, O ye children	到我这儿来啊，孩子们!
And whisper in my ear	贴耳朵悄悄告诉我：
What the birds and the winds are singing	在你们充满阳光的大气里
In your sunny atmosphere.	风和鸟唱的是什么。
For what are all our contrivings,	我们的一切书本知识
And the wisdom of our looks,	和一切发明创造，
When compared with your caresses,	怎能比得上你们的爱抚，
And the gladness of your looks?	你们的一脸甜笑?
Ye are better than all the ballads	你们胜过世界上曾经
That ever were sung or said;	说唱的一切歌谣;
For ye are living poems,	你们是活的诗篇，而其他
And all the rest and dead.	全都是死的曲调。
