Thembi Maphanga was doused in petrol and set alight by her partner. I'm confused until he threw the petrol over me. And we fought for the match for a while. Thembi wears her scar as a blemish on the conscience of a country struggling with gender violence. Women themselves have taken to the streets to raise the problem. We normalize it. And I think we kept quiet so long that it got to a stage whereby it's uncontrollable. So staying in, if you're just going to die. You're not going to stay in there being abused every day and survive. It's either you physically die, or you emotionally die.

At least three women are killed by their intimate partners every day in South Africa. And yet the conviction rate remains extremely low. It is reaching a crisis situation. Some they call it crimes of passion, which is a really dangerous thing to happen but also difficult to police, because we have very few, if any witnesses. Usually the main witness is the same, is the perpetrator. But until a solution is found South Africa women have been urged to save themselves. There's a reason why I've survived, you know, to be the voice of all the women who died in the hands of their partners. I feel their reasons would be the same. You know, he is jealous, he was stalking, he was controlling and everything. I feel all the women who've died, their reasons are the same. So I am a survivor.
