Why He Couldn’t Leave?

There was a meeting with a large number of people. At first the speaker was very interesting, but as time went on, he became very boring. Finally when he was through, there was only one man sitting in the large room.

The speaker walked up to the man and said, “Thank you for hearing me out when all the others left the room.”

“Oh! Don’t mention it!” replied the man, “I cannot leave because I am the next speaker.”

很多人在开会。一开始，讲话的人还挺有趣的，可是渐渐的，他的讲话越来越无聊。终于他讲完了，大大的房间里只剩下一个人坐在下面。

讲话的人走过去对那个人说：“感谢你在所有人都离开后还听我说完。”

“哎，别提了!”那个人回答，“我不能离开是因为我是下一个要讲话的人!”

词汇讲解】

1. There was a meeting with a large number of people.“with a large number of people”用来修饰“meeting”，说明这是一个有很多人参与的会议。

2.speaker讲话的人。speaker在不同语境下有不同的意思：“ 演讲者,发言者”：Our first speaker tonight is Mr. White.今晚我们的第一个演讲者是怀特先生。“说某种语言的人”：He is an English speaker.他是讲英语的。

“议长”：I'd like to propose a motion, Mr. Speaker.议长先生, 我想提出一项动议。“扬声器, 喇叭“：The president addressed the students on the speaker.校长用扬声器向学生们讲话。

3.through完成。还可以指“通过, 过去”：Can I get through by this road?
