10、不可掉以轻心的出差

自从加入Innovo以来，Nancy还从没有到美国总部出差过。她一直期待能有这样一个机会，能和总部的同事们面对面地交流。VP Johnson每年都有至少一个月的时间回美国去，其中半个月是vacation（假期），另外就是每个quarter（季度）要到总部汇报工作和接受培训，一般每次要在美国stay（停留）一周的时间，除去在飞机上的时间，从机场到公司的时间，实际上每次到headquarter也是来去匆匆。所以每次出发前他都会叫secretary帮他提前几天做好trip schedule，然后征求各方面的意见进行调整，以免和其他同事的日程安排发生contradiction（冲突），浪费有限的出差时间。

这次Johnson又要去美国了，他决定带上Nancy一同前往，让她在business trip（出差）中帮助自己处理一些事务。Nancy得到notification（通知）后兴奋得不得了，她终于有机会到总部去看看了，说不定还能顺便游览一下美利坚合众国。

出发三周前，Johnson就通知Nancy赶快准备visa application（签证）。Nancy给American Embassy打电话咨询申请签证的程序，这个电话可真是名副其实的hotline（热线），她连着打了一个小时也没有打通，不是busyline（占线），就是no answer（无人接听）。她索性把这个号码save（保存）在电话记录里，每隔五分钟就redial（重拨）一次，试了无数遍之后，电话终于打通了。使馆显然是每天都要回答很多次同样的问题，竟然设了自助语音答复。在一次又一次地按提示选择了要咨询的内容后，Nancy终于找到了她要了解的内容。按照提示的要求，去美国的business visa（商务签证）需要准备的documents（材料）很多，比起之前去其他国家的手续显然麻烦很多。Nancy算算时间，必须得赶紧准备申请材料了，否则在出发前可能会拿不到签证的。而Johnson却不需要这些手续，他是US civilian（美国公民），以他的长期驻华work permission（工作许可），可以在被许可valid period（有效期）内，在中国和美国之间自由出入。

Nancy叫assistant帮她去使馆提交了要求的材料，又亲自去进行了interview，终于在离出发还有三天时拿到了签证。Nancy长舒了一口气，因为再晚一天她恐怕就订不到flight（航班）了。

出发前，Johnson把这次business trip需要向总部汇报的工作内容和注意事项提前告诉了Nancy，并通知她具体的schedule，让她按照这个schedule做好相应的准备：

We must make sure that everything will be fine during the trip. I don't want to bother people or waste our time. You know, we have only four days to make all the things done. One way to make sure that things get done on time is to make up a schedule or calendar.

Here is it. Let's have a look before we go.

Well, we are arriving in New York on Wednesday afternoon. On that night we're all having dinner together at the Queen Hall to meet other colleagues; the next evening we're going to an exhibition of IT products at the State Exhibition Centre, after which we're eating at the hotel.

On Friday afternoon I'm playing golf with my old boss Karl. In the evening we are meeting the others for cocktails and then taking a trip around the bay in a hydrofoil. On Saturday we're all attending a reception given by the American Association of Enterprises at the city hall; that is from 9:30 until late. Sunday night is going to be busy: I'm joining Karl and his family at the Rainbow Room for a pre-theatre dinner, then we're going to see Madame Butterfly at the Imperial Theater. Of course, you will be free to do whatever you like during that time.

On next Monday, we're visiting the model factory on Long Island and then flying out from Kennedy after lunch!

There will also be a formal meeting of Innovo, but the time has not been fixed yet.

Nancy按照这个schedule把自己的行程和任务做了一下调整。为了便于记忆，她把日程input（输入）在她的blackberry mobile phone（黑莓手机）里，开通了international roaming（国际漫游）业务，以便随时收发电子邮件，在行程中及时处理公司的事务。
