My love is like to ice, and I to fire

我的爱人像冰，我就像火

How comes it then that this her cold so great is not dissolved through my so hot desire

我的热望如此炽烈，为何却无法融化她冰样的冷

But harder grows the more I her entreat

恳求越切，她越冷酷坚硬

Or how comes it that my exceeding heat is not allayed by her heart-frozen cold

又是为何，我过度的热切不曾被她寒心的冷浇灭

But that I burn much more in boiling sweat

反而热汗腾腾愈烧愈烈

And feel my flames augmented manifold

熊熊火焰越发腾起跳跃

What more miraculous thing may be told

可还有什么比这更神奇

That fire, which all things melts, should harden ice

无所不化的火，烧硬了冰

And ice, which is congeal's with senseless cold

而那在酷寒中凝结的冰

Should kindle fire by wonderful device

却能奇妙地把烈火燃起

Such is the power of love in gentle mind

温柔的心中这爱的力量

That it can alter all the course of kind
