1. bring 〔call〕 sb. to account *要求作出解释

解俚语；词义溯源：迫使某人作出［说明、解释、解答（account）］

例 Iwant those bastards brought to account. I want each of them to stand in front of this committee and tell us why they failed to follow our wishes and what they did with the funds. You tell them I said I want them at our next meeting and that if they don't come, they'll regret it.

2. bring sb. up to date on sb. or sth. / bring sb. up to date **告知某人…的近况；使现代化，使不过时

解习语；词义溯源：给某人带来有关某人或某事的［最近的、最新的（up to date）］消息

例 Notice All WordPerfect 6. 0 Users: The computer room's library now receives the monthly WordPerfect Newsletter. The newsletter can bring you up to date on the latest applications for WP 6. 0 and has a lot of information on the WP Board system.

3. bring sth. about / bring about sth. ***使发生，引起

解短语动词；词义溯源：把某物带到［周围（around）］

例 The threat of sanctions has not brought about any noticeable change in their determination to go ahead with its nuclear program. Mr. Smith, a politics expert, predicts that even actual sanctions will not cause them to waver. “They've pretty much succeeded in their self-reliance campaign,” Mr. Smith explained his prediction. “Besides, they're already so isolated that sanctions really couldn't isolate them any further. ”

4. bring sth. into question **使被讨论；使被怀疑；使（人们）进一步考虑某事

例 You've got to find those two documents. Missing documents may bring our accounting practices into question. Let me know the moment you do, so I can rest my mind.

5. bring sth. to a halt **使停止，使终止

例 There was a nationwide strike by train and subway engineers brought rail service to a halt. Tens of thousands of commuters were left stranded and the government was forced to enact emergency measures to get the trains moving again. One measure was to train soldiers to engineer the trains.
