词组讲解

1. call sb. or sth. back / call back sb. or sth. ***叫回来;收回(意见等),取消(声明等);回电话;召回

解 短语动词;词义溯源:要求某人[返回(back)]或[事后(back)]打电话

例 Shengjin Meat Company is calling back all cans of its Vienna Sausage brand after several customers discovered pieces of glass in cans they had purchased last week. If you have bought a can of the sausages recently, you are advised to bring the can back to the place you purchased it for a full refund.

2. call sb. names **辱骂;嘲笑

解 习语;词义溯源:把某人叫做[骂名、恶名、外号(names)];通常用来描述青少年的行为

例 Politicians seem to think that people vote for the candidate who's best at calling their opponents names. I've had enough of this name-calling! I want to hear real discussions of the issues.

3. call sb. on the carpet **斥责,责骂

解 〈口〉习语;被传唤过去[受责骂(on the carpet)]

例 Called on the carpet were the Deputy Secretary of Defense, the commander of the 84th Infantry Regiment and the entire staff of the military academy. The President reprimanded them all for the laxness in safety that led to the tragic death of the 54 cadets. Several senior officers have already been relieved of their duties.

4. call sb. or sth. into question **对…表示怀疑,对…提出异议

解 习语;词义溯源:把某人或某物呼唤到[问题、怀疑(question)][里面(into)]

例 I'm afraid this calls the whole basis of your hypothesis into question. You may not agree, but it causes enough doubt in my mind that I'm calling for a full reevalu-ation. We can't continue to rely on your hypothesis until we know for certain this new information doesn't negate it.

5. call sb. or sth. off / call off ***取消(活动),停止做某事;喊走;使…的注意力转向别处

解 短语动词;词义溯源:要求某人或某物处于[切断、离开、停止(off)]的状态

例 Haven't you heard? That concert was called off because the government wouldn't give the promoter, an American cigarette maker, the license to hold it in the stadium. They're trying to stop cigarette makers from promoting concerts and other popular young people's activities. This is just the first step.
