英国王室原来这么忙？
五月初，当菲利普亲王宣布他将于今夏退休时，或许很多人会想知道，英国女王伊丽莎白二世的丈夫到底要从什么样的工作中退出来。
While some may imagine the royal family spend their days inside Buckingham Palace drinking tea and eating cucumber sandwiches, it seems being a member of one of the world’s most famous families is harder than it appears.
在一些人的想象中，王室成员平时在白金汉宫里喝喝茶，吃吃黄瓜三明治，但作为世界上最著名的家族之一的成员，似乎比看起来要难。
Prince Philip himself carried out 110 royal engagements last year, according to the BBC. These kinds of events involve speaking at dinners or attending openings of new buildings, such as schools or hospitals.
据BBC报道，菲利普亲王去年亲自就执行过110次皇室公务。这些活动包括晚宴讲话，或是参加学校、医院等落成开幕仪式。
The Queen also stays busy. According to The Independent, a normal day for her begins at 7:30 am. She briefly checks the national newspapers before going through the hundreds of letters she receives each day, replying to many of them personally. Her weeks are normally filled with meetings that take place all over the country.

The rest of the family do their duty, too.

“The Queen can’t be in two places at once, so she relies on the rest of the royal family to help fulfill engagements and connect with the public,” wrote Caroline Praderio of Business Insider.

If there were a prize for busiest royal family member, the Queen’s only daughter, Princess Anne, would win it every year. According to the Daily Express, she carried out over 500 royal engagements in 2016 – more than Princes William and Harry and the Duchess of Cambridge, Kate Middleton, combined.

But Prince William may soon catch up to his hard-working aunt. At the moment, he works around 20 hours per week as a helicopter (直升飞机) pilot for an ambulance service, giving his salary to charity. However, he will quit this role in the summer to take over many of his grandfather’s duties.

“The increase in William’s engagements is to be expected. It should also be remembered that he is jugglinghis job as an air ambulance pilot, his charity work in which he is so active, and raising a family,” Richard Fitzwilliams, royal commentator, told the Daily Express.

Despite this, Prince William has a long way to go before he matches the status of Philip, who famously has “a reputation for being overly plain-speaking (直言不讳的),” as The New York Times put it.
