When I was 17, I read a quote that went something like: "If you liveeach day as if it was your last, someday you'll most certainly beright." Itmade an impression onme, and since then, for the past 33years, I have looked in the mirror every morning and asked myself: "Iftoday were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am aboutto do today?" And whenever the answer has been "No" for too many daysin a row, I know I need to change something.

Remembering that I'll be dead soon is the most important tool I'veever encountered to help me make the big choices in life. Becausealmost everything - all external expectations, all pride, all fear ofembarrassment or failure - these things just fall away in the face ofdeath, leaving only what is truly important.

Remembering that you aregoing to die is the best way I know to avoid the trap of thinking youhave something to lose. You are already naked. There is no reason notto follow your heart.

There are so many remarkable things going on here at this campus, but if Melinda and Ihad to put into one word what we love most about Stanford, it's the optimism.

There's an infectious feeling here that innovation can solve almost every problem. That's the belief that drove me in 1975 to leave a college in the suburbs of Boston and go on an endless leave of absence.

We are not really solving problems. We are just working on puzzles.I think most of you have a broader world view than I had at your age. You can do better at this than I did. If you put your hearts and minds to it, you can surprise the pessimists. We are eager to see it.

So here is our appeal to you all.As you leave Stanford, take all your genius and your optimism and your empathy, and go change the world in ways that will make millions of people optimistic.

You don't have to rush. You have careers to launch and debts to pay and spouses to meet and marry. That's plenty enough for right now. But in the course of your lives, perhaps without any plan on your part, you will see suffering that's going to break your heart. And when it happens, don't turn away from it.That's the moment that change is born.

Whether it’s race, gender, language, sexual orientation, religious or ethnic origin, or our beliefs and values themselves – diversity doesn’t have to be a weakness. It can be our greatest strength.

We have the good fortune to live in a time of tremendous possibilities and potential; a time when we have it within our grasp to eliminate extreme poverty, end terrible diseases like TB and malaria, and offer a real chance at an education to all.

Heartbreak is far more insidious than we realize. There is a reason we keep going down one rabbit hole after another, even when we know it’s going to make us feel worse.

Getting over heartbreak is not a journey. It’s a fight, and your reason is your strongest weapon. There is no breakup explanation that’s going to feel satisfying. No rationale can take away the pain you feel. So,don’t search for one, don’t wait for one, just accept the one you were offered or make up one yourself and then put the question to rest, because you need that closure to resist the addiction.

And you need something else as well: you have to be willing to let go, to accept that it’s over. Otherwise, your mind will feed on your hope and set you back. Hope can be incredibly destructive when your heart is broken.
