同济大学是教育部直属重点大学，创建于1907年。一早期为德国医生在上海创办的德文医学堂，取名“同济”意蕴合作共济。

Tongji University is one of the leading universities directly under the State Ministry of Education. it was founded in 1907 as Tongji German Medical School by Erich Paulun，a German doctor in Shanghai. The name Tongji suggests cooperating by riding the same boat.

目前是一所拥有理、工、医、文、法、哲、经济、管理、教育9大学科门类的综合性大学作为研究型大学，学校是首批被国务院批准成立研究生院的高校之一;作为全国重点大学，学校被列入国家财政立项资助的“211工程”和国家教育振兴行动计划与地方重点共建的高水平大学行列。

It has developed into a comprehensive univarsity which offers programs in nine disciplines of science，engineering，medicine，liberal arts，lawphilosophy，economics，management and education. As a univarsity which had established a reputation for its research，Tongji became one of the first group of universities which were authorized by the China State Council to establish its Graduate School. As one of the leading universities，it was successful in its application for the“211 Program”which provided universities with substantial government fund.

同济大学地处上海市东北隅，分四个校区，占地面积247公顷，建筑总面积1379271平方米。同济大学图书馆总面积71400平方米馆藏图书317万多册，中文现刊2 495种，外文现刊840种，电子图书100万多册。

Tongji University is located in the northeast of Shanghai with four campuses. It now occupies a total area of over 247 hectares with a floor space up to 1379271 square meters. The university library has a floor space of 71400 square meters and the total collection of the university library reaches over 3 .17 million volumes. In addition，there are 2 495 kinds of Chinese periodicals，840 kinds of foreign periodicals and more than one million electric books.

同济大学现有建筑与城市规划、土木工程、经济与管理、电子与信息工程、环境科学与工程、机械工程、材料科学与工程、交通运输、外国语、文法、医学、理学、汽车、海洋与地球科学、生命科学与技术、传播与艺术、女子学院及软件学院等学院，还建有继续教育、高等技术、职业技术教育、国际文化交流、网络教育、汽车营销及电影学院等，学校还设有经中德政府批准合作培养硕士研究生的中德学院、与法国巴黎高科大学集团合作举办的中法工程和管理学院等。

In addition，there are Institute of Further Education，Institute of Higher Technology，Institute of Vocational and Technical Education，Institute of Education，Women's College，Institute of Automobile Marketing.There are also Sino-Ger-man Institute which is authorized by Chinese and German governments to run postgraduate courses and French Institute of Engineering and Management jointly established by Tongji University and ParisTech

目前学校共有82个本科专业、209个硕士点、8个硕士专业学位授权点，博士授权点'78个，13个博士后流动站。学校有各类学生59 437人，其中研究生17 395人，本专科生22 141人，成人教育生13 284人，留学生1 829人。1教学科研人员8 182人，其中有中科院院士5人，工程院院士7人.教授等正高级职称者584人，副教授等副高级职称者1 300多人。

Tongji University offers 82 undergraduate specialties，209 masfier's programs， 8 authorized master degree specialties，78 doctoral programs and 13 post-doctoral research stations.The university now registers over 59437 postgraduates，22141 undergraduates，13 students at all levels，including 17284 students of adult education 395 and 1829 overseas students.There are over 8 182 academic staff for teaching and research，among whom there are 5 members of Chinese Academy of Sciences，7 members of Chinese Academy of Engineering，584 professors and over 1 300 associate professors

历史变迁 Glorious History

1907年同济大学的前身同济德文医学堂成立。

1907 Tongji University，formerly Tongji German Medical School was established.

1912年学校更名为同济医工学堂。

1912 The school got its new name as Tongji Medical and Engineering

1927年学校更名为国立同济大学。

1927 it was renamed National Tongji University.

1937年抗日战争时期，同济大学被迫先后迁往浙江金华 、江西赣州、云南昆明、四川宜宾。

1937 During the Anti一apanese War(1937一1945)，the university campus wasmoved from Shanghai first to Zhejiarag Province，then to Jiangxi Province and Yunnan Province and later to Sichuan Province.

1946年同济大学迁回上海。

1946 It was eventually moved back to Shanghai.

1996年原上海建材工业学院和上海城建学院并人。

1996 The university merged with Shanghai Institute of Urban Construction and Shanghai Institute of Building Materials

2000年原上海铁道大学与同济大学合并。

2000 The expanded Tongji University merged again with Shanghai Railway Universify.
