【辨析】begin 与 start：两者均可表示“开始”，在很多情况下可换用。但有以下区别：1. begin 表示的开始往往指从起点开始，而 start 则不一定。因此当一件事中断后再开始时通常应用 start again：Building began last week. 上周开始建造了。/ The meeting started and stopped, and after a long pause, started again. 会议开始后又停止了，过了好长一会儿，才又开始。2. begin 的动作性较弱，start 的动词性较强，因此在表示某种状态或缓慢的“开始”时多用 begin；表示某种动作尤其是某种急速的动作“开始”时，要用 start：School begins on September 1. 9 月 1 日开学。/ The cat suddenly started rushing at the mouse. 那只猫突然开始向那只老鼠扑去。3. 表示“开动”、“出发”等，一般用 start：My father couldn’t start the car. 我父亲无法开动汽车。4. 两者均为非延续性动词，因此不能与表示一段时间的状语连用。

【用法】表示“起初”或“在开始时”，可用介词 in 或 at；表示“从一开始”用from the beginning；若其后接有介词 of， 则其前通常用介词 at：A war broke out at the beginning of the century. 世纪之初爆发了一次战争。

【用法】表示时间“在…之后”时，其反义词是 before(在…之前)；表示位置“在…后面”时，其反义词是 in front of(在…前面)。

【用法】1. 后接否定的宾语从句时，通常将否定转移到主句上：I don’t believe that he will lose the game.我相信他不会输掉这场比赛。2. 在简略答语中，一般不单独用 believe, 而用 I believe so. 或 I don’t believe so. [I believe not.] ：“Will it be fine tomorrow?” “I believe so.”“明天会是晴天吗？”“我相信会的。”

【辨析】believe sb 与 believe in sb：前者指相信某人的话(= believe what sb says)；后者指信任某人的为人(= trust sb)：I can believe him, but I cannot believe in him. 我相信他说的话，但是不相信他的为人。
