There are two main families of Standard English,the American and the British.American English is spoken in the USA and in Canada.British English is spoken in the West Indies,Britain,Australia,New Zealand and Africa.However,many other parts of the world also use English.In India English is an official language still and there is a special kind of Indian English.In several African countries,such as Nigeria and Ghana,English is spoken in schools and colleges.In many sciences English is the language of communication.There are about 300 million people who speak English as a first language,and there are another 300 million who use it as a second language.So English is now an international language and is useful to people who never go to England.

B:"I'll look up the rate."To look up doesn't mean to look high into the sky or to look at the roof.It means to search for and find some information.

A:What about the expression "goodbye"?Is that an idiom?

B:That is just a natural,grammatical English expression.It has a direct translation in other languages.

English is the world's most widely used language.As a native language,English is spoken by more than three hundred million people:in the U.S.,England, Australia, Canada and New Zealand.In some other countries.English is often necessary for business,education, information and other activities.So English is the second language there.

英语是世界上使用最广泛的英语。在美国、英国、澳大利亚和纽西兰，3亿多人把英文作为母语讲。在一些其它国家，英语在商业、教育、信息和其它活动中经常都是必须的。所以英语是那里的第二语言。

As a foreign language, no other language is more widely studied or used than English.We use it to listen to radio,to read books or to travel.It is also one of the working languages in the United Nations and is more used than the others.
