[00:15.88]Exercise 1
[00:19.62]Directions:
[00:22.86]Listen to the dialogue and note down the important information.
[00:28.80]Compare your notes with your group members,
[00:32.90]pool all your notes together and try to get all the important information.
[00:40.32]How Do You Succeed
[00:44.03]I:Dr Smith, you're a sociologist who has studied success.
[00:50.51]What do you think are the most important factors in success?
[00:56.02]S:Obviously no matter what field you're in, you have to have energy and ambition.
[01:03.22]I:Do you also have to have a lot of natural talent?
[01:08.83]S:Not necessarily.
[01:12.86]Research has shown that the people who get to the top
[01:17.98]aren't always the ones who have the most natural talent.
[01:22.69]But they are the ones who work really hard.
[01:27.52]I:So, is success just a question of hard work?
[01:33.31]S:No, it is more than hard work. It has to be very concentrated or focused hard work.
[01:41.56]In other words, you have to work effectively and you have to be very motivated.
[01:47.96]It's also a question of attitude.
[01:52.32]I:Could you explain what you mean?
[01:56.46]S:Well, if you think that work is a form of punishment,
[02:02.80]you'll never achieve your goals.
[02:06.61]You have to accept the difficult and painful moments in a positive manner.
[02:12.95]I:Can you give an example?
[02:17.12]S:Yes, of course.
[02:20.76]There are many people who have so much will and determination
[02:26.27]that they are not discouraged by difficulties.
[02:31.20]When she was in middle school, Condoleezza Rice, for example,
[02:37.39]was told that her scores on aptitude tests
[02:41.86]showed that she probably wouldn't do well in university.
[02:46.90]But that didn't discourage her.
[02:50.78]Inspired by her hardworking grandfather,
[02:55.68]she put so much energy into her studies that she entered university at 15
[03:01.76]and graduated at 19.
[03:06.01]Today she is the head of a college in Stanford University.
[03:11.95]She is the first woman and the first African-American
[03:17.53]to fill that prestigious position.
[03:21.35]I:She is certainly an inspiration and an example of courage and self-discipline.
[03:28.58]Exercise 2
[03:32.08]Directions:
[03:35.57]Listen to the dialogue again and write a summary of the dialogue.
[03:42.77]Listening 2
[03:46.15]Exercise 1
[03:49.93]Directions:
[03:53.53]Listen to the passage and write down the three pieces of advice given by the author.
[04:01.85]Let Yourself Go
[04:05.66]Several years ago,
[04:09.34]I received a post card from a friend in Iowa, who wrote, "I am skiing with abandon!
[04:17.87]I wondered what he meant, because when I ski it is always with fear.
[04:26.69]I think he meant he was skiing skillfully, joyfully, peacefully and confidently.
[04:38.46]Although I will never be able to ski with abandon,
[04:45.12]I do dream of living with abandon.
[04:50.02]I believe that successful men and women
[04:55.45]have got some secrets of living life to the fullest.
[05:01.72]First, you should have self-respect.
[05:07.37]This means believing in what you do and working hard.
[05:13.67]It means setting your own standards and not comparing yourself to others.
[05:21.44]It's not a question of being better than someone else,
[05:27.35]but being better than you thought you could be.
[05:33.36]Winston Churchill gave us a good example of self-respect despite criticism.
[05:41.82]When he was in his last year as the Prime Minister,
[05:48.37]he was attending an official ceremony.
[05:52.51]Several rows behind him two gentlemen began whispering:
[05:58.78]"That's Winston Churchill. They say he is getting senile."
[06:05.44]"They say he should retire
[06:09.94]so that a more dynamic and capable man can run the country."
[06:16.67]When the ceremony was over, Churchill turned to the men and said,"Gentlemen,
[06:24.66]they also say he is deaf!"
[06:29.70]The second secret to living life to the fullest is to devote yourself to others.
[06:37.58]You should believe in others and take time to help them fulfil their dreams.
[06:44.71]If you help other people to turn their dreams into reality,
[06:50.69]your own future will be brighter.
[06:55.01]The third secret is to turn disappointments into strengths.
[07:01.63]Many people who live with abandon have discovered that hardships
[07:08.04]make them more sensitive and loving.
[07:13.04]Disappointments can help build one's endurance and character.
[07:19.38]History is filled with the stories of heroic men and women
[07:26.04]who have triumphed over adversity and demonstrated victorious spirits.
[07:33.31]Raise him in poverty, and you have an Abraham Lincoln.
[07:40.15]Make her blind and deaf, and you have a Helen Keller.
[07:47.57]Exercise 2
[07:51.17]Directions:
[07:54.73]Listen to the passage again
