00:05.30]1 Different food

[00:16.07]1.It’s kind of vegetable.

[00:20.74]It looks a bit like a strange green flower or something like that.

[00:28.11]You take off the outside leaves and boil the inside leaves until they’re soft.

[00:35.97]I usually dip them in a little bit of sauce- just oil and lemon and garlic.

[00:43.73]2.It’s kind of fruit. It’s very common in south-east Asia-and very popular too.

[00:52.95]It looks really strange. It’s got a really strong smell and quite a strange texture.

[01:01.78]My mum said it’s like eating a pillow or cushion or something!

[01:07.84]3.It’s traditional Turkish meat dish.

[01:15.39]but you also get it in Greece,in lran, all over the place, really.

[01:22.55]You use fresh lamb and grill it and then serve it either on its own

[01:29.91]or in this kind of flat bread, with a bit of salad.

[01:35.48]4.It’s kind of traditional Spanish seafood dish.

[01:43.13]Well,I suppose really it’s a rice and seafood dish.

[01:49.30]You have to use a special kind of rice

[01:54.16]and you add different kinds of fish and shellfish and things.

[02:00.03]It’s delicious. Most areas in spain have their own special way of cooking it.

[02:07.58]5.It’s kind of a salad.

[02:13.77]You can have it as a side dish or just on its own-in the summer.

[02:20.23]It’s basically just mushrooms and radish

[02:25.40]and whatever kind of green leaves you’ve got available.

[02:30.15]6.It’s kind of dessert. It’s eaten all over the Middle East.

[02:38.80]It’s a bit like a little cake of something.

[02:43.37]It’s covered in pastry and it’s filled with nuts and honey.

[02:49.43]It’s quite fattening.I suppose.but it’s really delicious.

[02:55.67]7.It’s kind of cake.My mum used to make it all the time when I was growing up.

[03:05.03]She used to put rum or brandy in it.so it was quite rich.

[03:11.27]quite heavy. You couldn’t really eat more than one slice of it.

[03:17.33]8.It’s traditional Middle Eastern starter or side dish.

[03:24.49]It’s made from crushed chickpeas and you mix that with a bit of lemon.

[03:31.25]You dip pitta bread into it.It’s really nice.

[03:37.13]9.It’s kind of traditional soup.

[03:43.58]You usually put a lot of beans in it-and then maybe some carrots

[03:49.85]or whatever other kind of vegetables you have available.

[03:54.61]It’s very filling. It’s great in the winter.

[03:59.46]2. Eat your greens!

[04:09.81]People in developed countries are increasingly suffering from illnesses resulting from over-eating.

[04:18.77]While starvation and famine are still big problems in many poor countries in the world,

[04:26.71]In America and other western countries,

[04:31.86]more than twenty-five percent of the population are obese.

[04:37.50]This doesn’t just mean yur’re a little bit fat,

[04:42.64]it means you are more than twenty kilos overweight.

[04:48.10]And Dr John Colon from Ohio State University says the problem is only going to get worse.

[04:56.88]As more women have gone out to work,

[05:01.43]you find that parents in general have less time to spend on preparing food.

[05:08.98]That’s not just the cooking, but also planning what to eat,

[05:15.64]doing the shopping and buying fresh food.

[05:20.99]Families.therefore,increasingly rely on ready made and frozen meals,

[05:28.36]which tend to be high in fat and contain a lot of additives and sugar.

[05:34.92]The other thing is that parents seem to feel guily about not spending

[05:42.07]so much time with their kids.

[05:46.23]so they tend to give in a lot quicker to children’s demands for things like sweets and chocolate.

[05:53.88]Ben Brown, who is a British Member of Parliament, blames the big food companies.

[06:01.95]He wants to ban any food advertising which is aimed at children.

[06:08.01]The problem is that these companies spend millions of pounds selling food to children.

[06:15.67]It’s all crisps in the shape of dinosaurs and chocolate in the shape of Mickey Mouse.

[06:23.03]I mean, what’s going to seem more fun to an eight-year-old-

[06:28.49]an ice cream with a free toy or an apple?

[06:33.46]One food company thinks it has an answer to this:

[06:39.33]it has invented pizza-flavoured brocoli,baked-bean-flavoured peas.

[06:46.60]cheese and onion-flavoured cauliflower and chocolate-flavoured carrots.

[06:53.36]It developed the Whacky Veg,with money donated by a cancer research charity,

[07:01.02]which found that a diet containing lots of fruit and vegetables helps reduce cancer.

[07:08.38]However,today’s sweet-toothed kids need to be bribed into a healthy diet,

[07:15.93]and will only eat their greens if they taste different.

[07:21.39]1 Listening

[07:37.27]Do you want any more of this chicken?

[07:41.64]No.honestly,I’m full.Finish it off.

[07:46.18]Are you sure? You don’t seem to have eaten much.Have you tried the fish?

[07:53.34]Yeah,but to be honest,it was a bit too hot for my liking.

[07:59.11]Oh,sorry.Don’t worry about it.

[08:03.16]Well,What did you think of the vegetable dish? That was lovely.Yeah,

[08:09.69]it was OK,A bit too greasy for my liking.but it was OK.

[08:15.57]Oh,dear,I’m sorry.we should’ve gone somewhere else.

[08:21.63]No.no.The rest of it was lovely. But we only had rice apart from that.

[08:28.40]There was the soup as well.

[08:32.37]It’s just a shame you spilt most of it when you got up to go to the toilet.

[08:38.53]Yes,sorry about that,I’m sure the stain will wish out.

[08:45.30]Hopefully,Don’t worry,These things happen.

[08:50.65]But you should’ve asked for some more. You must still be hungry.

[08:56.61]Honestly,I’m fine,.I couldn’t eat another thing.Shall we get the bill?

[09:04.26]I suppose so.Excuse me.Excuse me.could we have the bill?

[09:12.41]Of course.sir.Was everything all right?

[09:16.98]Yes,it was lovely. How much is it?

[09:22.73]Forty pounds.Forty pounds?That can’t be right.

[09:29.50]I know,what does that say?Is that a D or an A?

[09:36.73]Yeah,I think it’s a D.They’ve charged us for the D menu instead of the A.

[09:43.97]It’s almost five pounds more expensive.

[09:48.62]Excuse me...excuse me... Yes,sir?

[09:54.49]I’m sorry,but I think you’ve got the bill wrong.

[10:00.66]You’ve charged us for D menu but we had menu A.

[10:07.14]I’m sorry,one moment.I’m sorry.you’re absolutely right.

[10:14.69]That should be thirty-one pounds,not forty.

[10:20.36]That’s OK.These things happen.

[10:25.32]Cathy,shall I pay for this on my card and you can pay me back later?

[10:32.08]I’m sorry sir.we don’t take credit cards.Cheques or cash only.

[10:38.85]You’re joking.Have you got any cash?

[10:44.02]Only about ten pounds.Oh.no.Is there a cash machine near here?

[10:51.18]Yes,there’s one just down the road outside the supermarket.

[10:57.42]Right.do you want to wait here and I’ll go and get some cash out.

[11:03.90]Yeah,I guess I’ll have to.I’m really sorry about this.

[11:10.35]That’s OK.These things happen.I’ll be back in a moment.

[11:16.39]Has sir returned?

[11:22.63]No.not yet.I’m sure he’ll be back.I can’t imagine where he’s gone.

[11:30.29]He has been gone half an hour.

[11:34.83]4 Pronunciation:contractions

[11:47.40]You shouldn’t have said that.

[11:54.76]We should’ve gone somewhere else.

[11:59.44]I should’ve done it earlier.

[12:04.09]He should’ve sent his application form off earlier.

[12:09.94]I shouldn’t have asked.

[12:15.71]You should’ve thought about that before.shouldn’t you?

[12:21.56]You should’ve told me about it before.

[12:28.20]I shouldn’t have bothered!

[12:33.95]You should’ve come.

[12:38.49]I shouldn’t have eaten so much!
