[00:01.21]I stand here today humbled by the task before us,
[00:14.38]grateful for the trust you have bestowed,
[00:18.48]mindful of the sacrifices borne by our ancestors.
[00:24.53]I thank President Bush for his service to our nation,
[00:30.00]as well as the generosity and cooperation he has shown throughout this transition.
[00:40.40]Forty-four Americans have now taken the presidential oath.
[00:46.26]The words have been spoken during rising tides of prosperity and the still waters of peace.
[00:53.57]Yet, every so often the oath is taken amidst gathering clouds and raging storms.
[01:03.20]At these moments, America has carried on not simply because of the skill or vision of those in high office,
[01:11.00]but because we the People have remained faithful to the ideals of our forbearers,
[01:17.59]and true to our founding documents.
[01:22.16]So it has been. So it must be with this generation of Americans.
[01:29.47]That we are in the midst of crisis is now well understood.
[01:34.13]Our nation is at war,
[01:35.52]against a far-reaching network of violence and hatred.
[01:40.19]Our economy is badly weakened,
[01:42.19]a consequence of greed and irresponsibility on the part of some,
[01:46.47]but also our collective failure to make hard choices and prepare the nation for a new age.
[01:53.55]Homes have been lost; jobs shed; businesses shuttered.
[01:57.45]Our health care is too costly; our schools fail too many;
[02:01.42]and each day brings further evidence that the ways we use energy strengthen our adversaries and threaten our planet.
