1. 表示抽象意义的“死”或动词作意义的“死”，通常为不可数名词。如：

Death comes to all men. 人皆有一死。

Food poisoning can cause death. 食物中毒可导致死亡。

Ten people burnt to death in the hotel fire. 旅馆失火烧死了10人。

Death occurred about midnight, the doctor says. 医生说大约是在半夜死的。

但当表示不同人或多个人的死亡时，也可用作可数名词。如：

A bad driver was responsible for their deaths. 他们的死是个技术不佳的司机造成的。

The police are investigating the mysterious deaths of children at the hospital. 警方正在这家医院调查小孩神秘死亡的事。

另外，当表示某种类型的死时，也可用作可数名词。如：

When we die for the people it is a worthy death. 为人民而死，死得其所。

2. 表示具体的死亡人数等，则为可数名词。如：

There have been more deaths from drowning. 溺水死亡人数有所增加。

The number of deaths has risen to more than two dozen. 死亡人数已上升到24人。
