Often used on the busy Underground, in this tactic the picker stands behind the victim while the staller creates a distraction in front.

In this case the staller drops a bag on the escalator, forcing the victim to help prevent a human traffic jam building up.

But this leaves the picker behind ample opportunity to swipe the victim's valuables from their pocket.

'What you are trying to do is sandwich your victim in a way that appears natural,' explained Windsor.

'Weirdly, if you get hold of a wallet and pull it out of a pocket, people feel it, but if you get your hands on it and just let them walk away, they don't feel it.'

Solution

An easy prevention in this case is to use inner pockets to store items such as phones and wallets.

In this instance our sleight-of-hand star shows how people tend to leave bags away from them at their side or behind their heads when relaxing on the grass.

This allows a staller to walk over and ask for directions, while the picker swoops in from the opposite direction to take the bag while you are talking.

'This also happens on busy beaches in holiday resorts, for example by selling someone something and getting them to look away for a moment,' said Windsor.

Solution

The prevention in this case is to always place an arm or a leg through the bag handle.

For this distraction technique, one thief watches their unsuspecting victim entering their pin number, while a co-conspirator drops money on the floor and interrupts the victim to deviously ask if they had dropped the note.

While the target is distracted, the picker dives in to take the card out the machine, leaving them thinking the card had been swallowed when they look back round.

'I believe the elderly are a particular target for criminals who use this method. They might be distracted more easily or not very good at hiding their pin number. But really anyone is a target,' said Windsor.

Solution

To prevent this kind of theft you must always cover your pin, advisably by the use of your wallet to shield your fingers.

In this scenario, pickpockets pounce with a newspaper or a magazine that they pretend to read, while the victim is looking away, perhaps at the times on the board.

Sliding their hand underneath the paper the thief then takes items from the victim's bag, ensuring that both they, and nobody else, can notice.

Solution

A good tip to stop this is to swing your bag around to your front whenever reading information, or ensure it is always zipped up.

Zipped bags are not automatically safe, however, and those with easy to unzip bags are frequently picked upon while walking down a busy street.

In this scenario, a picker can potentially follow the victim for several minutes, slowly unzipping their bag a little at a time before snatching the contents.

'Traffic lights are a good place for pickpockets to unzip a bag and stick their hand in,' said Windsor. 'This is a really common method.'

Solution

Here pedestrians should swing their bags to their front or cover them with an arm to be extra careful.

In this penultimate scenario a picker asks for directions on a map or pretends to sell something to you, holding their prop above your personal item such as a phone on the table.

While you are distracted helping with the pickpocket's query they can then grab the personal item with a hand under the map or prop.

'The single most commonly stolen thing is a mobile phone because they are high value,' said Windsor.

'Sometimes pickpockets use kids to distract people while they steal from them.'

Solution

To avoid being set up here you should always put items back into your pocket after use, and take them out of sight if a stranger approaches the table.

Last is the double-theft technique used in the 'Photo Opportunity' scenario, where the victim puts their bag on the ground in order to hold the camera and take a photo when asked by the pickpocket.

Their co-worker then swoops in from behind to take the bag, while the picker getting their photo taken can even remove an item from your back pocket while explaining how to work the device.

'The key here is finding a way to get into someone's personal space without setting off subconscious alarm bells through something such as asking for a photo or asking for directions.' said Windsor.

Solution

A key prevention strategy here is to not put the bag down, refusing to take the photo if necessary, and zipping up your pockets.

Big whoopee!

A: I got a new South Park Kenny doll!

B: Big whoopee! I've had all the Kenny dolls for months.
