The Chinese Foreign Ministry says the upcoming meeting between the presidents of China and the United States will focus on fundamental issues shaping bilateral relations.
Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning made the statement as the leaders prepare for their meeting in San Francisco, where they will also attend the 30th APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting.
"The two heads of state will hold in-depth discussions on strategic, overall and directional matters concerning China-US relations, as well as key issues related to global peace and development. China has consistently approached its relations with the US based on the principles of mutual respect, peaceful co-existence and win-win cooperation as proposed by President Xi Jinping. Competition between major powers goes against the prevailing trend of the times and falls short in addressing challenges confronting the US and the world."
The spokesperson also says China hopes the U.S. will honor its promise of not seeking a new Cold War, or conflict with China, and work together with Beijing to bring bilateral relations back to the track of sound and stable development.
