[Global Times reporter Liu Ming] European Commission President von der Leyen recently said that the United Kingdom is moving toward the direction of "return to the European Union", but the British Prime minister's spokesman on November 29 refuted this view.

According to the European edition of the United States "Political News Network" reported that on November 28, local time, when asked whether the United Kingdom can rejoin the European Union, von der Leyen said that it is up to the next generation to "correct" the mistake of Britain's "Brexit" : "I always tell the children that if you mess up things, you have to find a way to solve it." So I also think my personal view of the way forward is clear." Earlier this year, Britain and the EU reached the "Windsor Framework" agreement on regional trade arrangements for Northern Ireland, which von der Leyen described as a "new beginning for an old friend".

Ms von der Leyen's comments sparked a swift backlash in the UK. The British "Guardian" said that on November 29, when asked whether Prime Minister Sunak believed that Britain would return to the EU, his spokesman said that Sunak did not think that Britain was in danger after "Brexit". He said: "It is through the freedom of Brexit that we can consider further strengthening the immigration system; It is through the freedom of Brexit that we will be able to ensure that British patients have faster access to medicines."

Sunak's appointment of former British Prime Minister David Cameron as foreign secretary in November sparked speculation about Britain's "return to the EU." Mr Cameron has said he is "determined" to work closely with Brussels and wants Britain to be a "friend, neighbour and partner" of the EU. The European Commission said Cameron and European Commission Vice President Sevjovic met in Brussels on Nov. 29 to establish new "personal contacts." Starmer, the leader of the British Labour Party, said he hoped to improve relations with the EU and cooperate further on issues such as veterinary standards.

According to a YouGov poll published on November 29, 57 percent of the British public supports a return to the EU single market. A further 52 per cent of Britons believe Brexit was a mistake.
