About 61 people were killed when a migrant boat capsized off the western coast of Libya, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) said Wednesday, AFP reported.

The boat carrying migrants was reportedly swamped by waves after setting off from Zuwara, on Libya's northwest coast, and "a large number of migrants" on board are thought to have died in rough seas.

The International Organization for Migration says the boat was carrying over 80 people when the shipwreck occurred.

Twenty-five people have been rescued.

The Mediterranean migrant route is one of the deadliest in the world, but large numbers of migrants still risk the crossing. Since 2011, Libya has been in continuous political turmoil, and many illegal migrants use Libya as a transit point to cross the Mediterranean Sea by boat to Europe.
