Xinhua News Agency, Geneva, Dec. 21 Malaria vaccine R21/Matrix-M has been added to the WHO list of prequalified vaccines, according to a press release released by the World Health Organization on the 21st. This is the world's second malaria vaccine, which the World Health Organization recommended in early October for children in areas at high risk of malaria transmission.

Access to the prequalification list is a prerequisite for UNICEF to procure vaccines and for GAVI to provide financial support. As a result, WHO said in a statement, inclusion on the list of prequalified vaccines means increased access to this vaccine as a key tool for preventing malaria in children.

The R21 vaccine, developed at the University of Oxford and produced by the Serum Institute of India, is the second malaria vaccine to enter the WHO prequalification list. The first malaria vaccine, RTS,S/AS01, was prequalified in July last year. Both vaccines have been shown to be safe and effective in clinical trials to prevent malaria in children. If these vaccines are rolled out along with other recommended malaria control interventions, they are expected to have a major impact on public health, WHO said.

Malaria is a life-threatening disease caused by a parasite that is transmitted to humans through the bite of an infected female Anopheles mosquito. Malaria is preventable and curable, but can be fatal if not treated promptly. According to WHO, more than 30 countries around the world have areas of moderate to high malaria transmission, which could provide additional protection to more than 25 million children each year once malaria vaccine supplies are increased.
