The R21 vaccine, developed at the University of Oxford and produced by the Serum Institute of India, is the second malaria vaccine to enter the WHO prequalification list. The first malaria vaccine, RTS,S/AS01, was prequalified in July last year. Both vaccines have been shown to be safe and effective in clinical trials to prevent malaria in children. If these vaccines are rolled out along with other recommended malaria control interventions, they are expected to have a major impact on public health, WHO said.

Malaria is preventable and curable, but can be fatal if not treated promptly. According to WHO, more than 30 countries around the world have areas of moderate to high malaria transmission, which could provide additional protection to more than 25 million children each year once malaria vaccine supplies are increased.
