四十三 鹦鹉

The deep affections of the breast 胸膛里蕴藏的无限深情，
That Heaven to living things imparts, 原是上天对生命的赐予，
Are not exclusively possess'd 这却并不是人类的心灵
By human hearts. 独有的天赋。
A Parrot, from the Spanish main, 一只鹦鹉，年轻，翅膀亮，
Full young and early caged came o'er, 在笼中，从西班牙所豁的大陆
With bright wings, to the bleak domain 飘洋来到这马耳岛岸上——
Of Mulla's shore. 凄凉的国土。
To spicy groves where he had won 向芳香树丛（从这儿他获得
His plumage of resplendent hue, 一身羽毛，色彩绚烂），
His native fruits, and skies, and sun, 向青天，阳光，故乡的水果，
He bade adieu. 他说声再见。
For these he changed the smoke of turf, 换来的是泥炭烧出的浓烟，
A heathery land and misty sky, 石南满地长，天空雾茫茫，
And turn'd on rocks and raging surf 他金色的眼睛转向巉岩
His golden eye. 和咆哮的海浪。
But petted in our climate cold, 仍受到宠爱，在寒冷地带，
He lived and chatter'd many a day: 他活着，长时间喋喋不休：
Until with age, from green and gold 到老迈，翅膀变灰白，不再
His wings grew gray. 金灿灿，绿油油。
At last when blind, and seeming dumb, 最后眼瞎了，像成了哑巴，
He scolded, laugh'd, and spoke no more, 他骂人，傻笑，不再言语；
A Spanish stranger chanced to come 一个西班牙人偶然到
To Mulla's shore; 达这马耳岛屿；
He hail'd the bird in Spanish speech, 他用西班牙语来招呼鹦鹉，
The bird in Spanish speech replied; 鹦鹉也用西班牙语答复；
Flapp'd round the cage with joyous screech, 绕笼子振翅，喜极而尖呼，
Dropt down, and died. 跌下来，死去。
