One day in the afternoon, in the garden of the famous Giant Elephant Group Headquarter Building located in Manhattan, New York, a gray-haired old man was concentrating on trimming low shrubs.
突然，一团卫生纸抛落在刚剪过的灌木上。白花花的卫生纸在青翠的灌木上显得特别刺眼。老人抬眼望去，是坐在花园边一张长椅上的一个中年妇女扔过来的。中年女人一边嘴里对身边的孩子说着什么，一边满不在乎地看着老人。老人什么也没说，捡起那团纸丢进了旁边的垃圾筒。
All of a sudden, a mass of tissue was thrown from somewhere on the trimmed shrubs. The white tissue was especially dazzling on the green shrubs. The old man looked up and saw a middle-aged woman sitting on a bench in the garden who threw the tissue. The woman kept groaning to her son while looking at the old man with great contempt. The old man did not say anything and picked up the tissue and put it into the garbage can.
这时，又一团纸飞了过来。“妈妈，你要干什么？”儿子奇怪地问。中年女人只朝他摆了摆手，示意他不要吱声。这次，老人仍然没说什么，走过去又将那团纸放进了垃圾筒。可是，老人刚拿起剪刀，第三团纸又落在了他眼前的灌木上。如此这般，老人一连捡起了中年女人扔的六团纸，但他始终没有流露出不满和厌烦的神色。
At this moment, another mass of tissue flew over again. “Mum, what are you doing?” the boy asked with surprise. His mother waved at him, indicating him to keep silent. This time, the old man did not say anything again and picked up the tissue and then put it into the garbage can again. However, when the old man picked up the scissor again, a third tissue fell on the shrubs in front of him again. The same situation happened consecutively and the old man picked up the tissues the woman threw for six times yet without showing any dissatisfaction or irritation.
“我希望你明白，如果你现在不努力学习，将来只能跟这老园工一样没出息，只能干低贱、卑微的工作！”中年女人指着老人在教育儿子。
“I hope you can understand that if you do not study hard, you will be as useless as the old gardener who can only do this humble job!” The woman pointed to the old man and educated her son.
这时，老人才明白，中年女人生气是因为孩子的学习成绩不好，她要让孩子明白学习的重要性，而自己成了她“现身说法”的“活教材”。
Not until then did the old man realize the woman felt angry because her son did not study well and that she wanted her son to know the significance of studies by taking the old man as a live example.
老人听到了中年女人的话，放下剪刀走过去说：“夫人，这是巨象集团的私家花园，按规定只有集团员工才能进来。”
At hearing what the woman said, the old man put down the scissor and walked to her, saying, “Madam, this is the private garden for Giant Elephant Group and only the staff can be admitted to be here.”
中年女人掏出一张证件朝老人晃了晃，趾高气扬地说：“我是巨象集团的部门经理，就在这座大厦里工作！”
The woman took out a document and shook it in front of the old man, saying with great arrogance, “I am a department manager in the company and working in this building!”
“我能借你的手机用一下吗？”老人沉思了一会儿说。
中年女人极不情愿地把手机递给老人。老人拨了一个号码，简单地说了几句话。中年女人又乘机教育儿子：“你看这些穷人，这么大年纪了，连只手机也买不起。你今后千万要努力啊！”
“May I borrow your mobile phone?” The old man said after thinking for a minute.
The woman handed her phone to him reluctantly. The old man dialed a number and said several words simply. The woman, by taking this chance, educated her son again, “Look at this poor guy! He is so old now but still too poor to afford a phone. So you should work harder in the future!”
这时，中年女人突然看到巨象集团人力资源部的负责人急匆匆地走过来，满脸堆笑地迎向老人，毕恭毕敬地站好。老人指着中年女人对来人说：“我现在提议免去这位女士在巨象集团的职务！”“是！总裁先生，我立刻按您的指示去办！”人力资源部负责人应声答道。
At this time, the woman suddenly saw the head of the HR department coming up hastily and smiling to the old man with great respect. The old man pointed at the woman and said, “Now I am proposing to sack this lady from our company!” “Yes, dear Mr President! I will follow your order!” The head of HR department replied.
老人走到男孩面前，抚摸着他的头，意味深长地说：“孩子，我希望你明白，虽然你要学习的东西很多，但你首先要学会尊重每一个人。”
The old man walked to the boy and stroked his head gently, saying seriously, “Dear little boy, I hope you can understand that though you have a lot to learn, what you must learn first is to respect every person.”
