Every parent's worst nightmare:|那是每位父母最糟糕的噩梦——

July 20, 2012,my phone rings at 4:30 in the morning.|2012 年 7 月 20 号，凌晨 4 点 30 分， 我手机响了。

It's my son Alex's girlfriend, Amanda, saying hysterically,|是我儿子的女朋友阿曼达打来的。她声嘶力竭地喊道，

They want to be famous.|他们想出名。

In fact, these murderers are telling us this themselves.|事实上，这些杀手们在亲身告诉我们这个事实。

The Sandy Hook murderer kept a spreadsheet of previous mass murderers and their number of kills.|桑迪胡克小学枪击案的凶手有一张写满了以往大屠杀凶手的列表，以及他们曾杀害的受难者的数量。

The Orlando Pulse nightclub murderer called a local news station --during his attack! --|奥兰多夜店枪击案的凶手在行凶期间甚至还给当地新闻台打电话，

and then stopped to check Facebook to see if he'd gone viral.|然后登陆他的脸书账号，查看他是否已经一夜爆红。

The Parkland murderer recorded and posted a video, stating,|帕克兰枪击案的杀手记录且上传了一段视频，并陈述道，

"When you see me on the news, you'll know who I am."|“当你看到我上了新闻，你就会知道我是谁了。”

The Aurora theater murderer told his psychiatrist|奥罗拉枪击案的凶手告诉他的心理医师，

that he recognized he couldn't make an impact on the world in science,|他意识到他不能在科学上给世界带来影响，

but he could become famous by blowing people up.|但他能通过炸死无辜的人来出名。

A man who was known by no one is now known by everyone,|他从鲜为人知变得广为人知，

These are just a few examples.|这些也只是部分的例子，

I could go on and on.|还有无数的例子。

These murderers are telling us they want to be famous like the murderers before them,|这些凶手在告诉我们，他们想要出名，像过去的杀手一样出名，

and the media continues to give them exactly what they seek: notoriety.|并且媒体也在不断给他们真正想要的——臭名昭著。

The gun debate is very emotional, and our mental health issues are very complicated.|关于枪支的争论总是容易情绪化，我们心理健康问题是十分复杂的。

Academic studies show that the average news consumer wants to hear less about the shooters.|有研究报道表明，一般看新闻的民众们不是很想知道枪手们的信息。

Instead, the media should elevate the names and images of the victims, both murdered and injured,|相反，媒体们应该用更多篇幅去报道伤亡者的名字和照片，

the heroes and the first responders. They should –|那些英雄们以及急救人员们。我们应该——

They should promote data and analysis from experts on the fields of mental health and public safety.|我们应该推广心理健康和公共安全领域专家的数据和分析。

The FBI, the International Police Association,|联邦调查局 (FBI)，国际警察协会 (the International Police Association)，

The American Psychiatric Association supports reducing and minimizing the identification of these shooters.|美国精神病学协会支持减少和最小化对这些枪手的身份曝光。

Write to the producers, editors, station managers and CEOs of these news organizations.|写信给做报道的人，他们所在的新闻公司的编辑、站长和 CEO。

Take note of the advertisers who support those segments and write to their CEOs.|记下赞助这些部分的广告商，并给他们的 CEO 写信。

Because together, we can push the media to act in the interest of public safety, not profits.|只要团结一致，我们就可以推动媒体， 让他们站在公众安全一边，而不是盈利的一边。

It's too late for Alex, and it's too late for my family.|对于亚历克斯来说，一切都太晚了，对我的家庭来说也太晚了。
