　　Thousands of regular listeners were shocked to hear the writer Lynn Barber admit to sleeping with 'probably 50 men' during two terms at Oxford - roughly one every two days.

　　'It was quite good going - I was just jamming them in,' declared the writer, now 66, known for her careful choice of words as well as her sobriquet 'the Demon Barber of Fleet Street' after her ruthlessly penetrating celebrity interviews.

　　But for one regular listener to the programme, her incredible admission had a particular, and possibly wounding, resonance, especially the bit where Barber blamed her sudden bout of sexual activity on being 'jilted' by her regular boyfriend.
