Thailand's government declared a state of emergency last night after protesters demanding the resignation of Abhisit Vejjajiva, the prime minister, invaded the country's parliament compound and forced his deputy to flee by helicopter.

The state of emergency covers Bangkok and surrounding provinces. It outlaws gatherings of more than five people and grants the police and army enhanced powers to restrict travel and hold suspects without charge.

The move makes it easier for the government to use force to end the month-long protests.

Despite the declaration, hundreds of red-shirted demonstrators were streaming into the main protest encampment last night, at a key intersection in the heart of Bangkok's retail and hotel zone.

“No one is afraid, no one is going home,” said Sean Boonpracong, a spokesman for the protesters. “We will resist their actions. We have called people in from the provinces.”

The protesters had earlier used a truck to ram the gates of the parliamentary compound before running into the building, forcing Suthep Thaugsuban, deputy prime minister, and other ministers to scale a wall and escape by helicopter.

The brief incursion into the parliament building was the latest tactic in the escalating campaign by thousands of red-shirted demonstrators to force Mr Abhisit's resignation.

He came to power in 2008 after a controversial parliamentary vote. The demonstrators believe he lacks legitimacy and want him to call fresh elections, but Mr Abhisit has refused to step down.

Although the prime minister has largely favoured a low-key approach, including abortive talks with the demonstrators, he now seems determined to shut down the protests.

“The government's goal is to help the situation return to a normalcy, to maintain the sanctity of the law,” Mr Abhisit said in a televised speech announcing the state of emergency.
