听力原文

Natalie:    Hello and welcome to another Question and Answer of the Week, I'm Natalie

Jean:    Hello and welcome to the other Question and Answer of the Week, I'm Jean.

Natalie:  The other question and answer of the week? Don't you mean to use the word another?

Jean:    Another or other, what's the difference? Just as well this is this week's question. 今天我们要解答的是中国一位听友就这方面给我们提出的问题,就是 another, other, 还有  the other 这三个词之间有什么样的区别。I'm confused already Natalie!

Natalie:  Don't worry Jean. Mixing up another and other is a common mistake by English learners, as this follows the rules about using articles.

Jean:    Ok, another 和 other 遵循的是冠词的用法。Oh no, not articles!

Natalie:  I know Jean, using articles in English can be very complex but we are going to give you a few examples today, which will hopefully help.

Natalie:  First let's look at another, which has two meanings.

Jean:  Another 其实有两种含义。So what are they Natalie?

Natalie:  Well another can mean additional or extra.

Jean:  Additional 附加的,或者  extra 额外的。

Natalie:  Here are some examples.

Insert

1. I'm very thirsty, could I have another lemonade?
2. I need another cup of tea.
3. I would like another piece of cake please.

Jean:  这个人说  I would like another piece of cake 就是说他还要再来一块  an additional 多要一块蛋糕。这么嘴馋,that's a bit greedy of them, isn't it Natalie?

Natalie:  Yes I think having two pieces of cake is a bit greedy. Although… I would love a piece of cake right now.

Jean:  Well Natalie you are in luck!

Jean:  Ta da! I just baked this cake this morning.

Natalie:    Mmm, chocolate cake.

Jean:  Would you like a piece?

Natalie:  Mmm… well… no… no we need to get to grips with another and other then we will have a piece of cake as a treat.

Jean:  Ok.

Natalie:  Now where were we?

Jean:  我们刚才给大家介绍了 another 有的时候有  additional“附加、额外”的意思。So what is the second meaning of another?

Natalie:  Well another can also mean an alternative.

Jean:    Another 还有一个意思,就是  an alternative 另外的一个,二中选一的一个。Well let's hear some examples.
Insert

1. I'm going to ask for another table, this one's too small.
2. This food is terrible. Let's go and find another restaurant.
3. I think we should paint the kitchen another colour.

Jean:  最后说话的那个人他说  'I think we should paint the kitchen another colour'  就是说他们想把厨房的墙粉刷上另一种颜色。Natalie, 我发现在我们刚才所有的例句中,每当出现  another 这个词的时候,它后面都跟的是一个名词单数,这是不是因为another 就是要和名词单数一起使用的呢?

Natalie:  Yes, Jean. Apart from a few exceptions another is generally used with singular nouns.

Jean:  Ok, 看来  another 一般后面跟的都是名词单数,没有复数。

STING

Jean:  那我们已经学到了  another 它的意思可以是  additional 附加额外的,或者是  an alternative 另外的一个。So what about the word other?

Natalie:  Well other follows the second meaning of another. So it can also be used to mean an alternative.

Jean:  Other 看来也可以表示“另外一个”二中选一的意思。

Natalie:  Well here is an example of using the word other.

Insert

1. Do you prefer this colour or that colour?
2. I prefer that colour.
3. No I like the other colour.

Jean:  那么  another 和  other 都有“另外一个”的意思。No wonder I get confused. 如果  another 和  other 的意思这么相同,我们又怎么知道什么时候该用哪一个词呢?

Natalie:  Well first let's listen again to that example of another.

Insert

1. I think we should paint the kitchen another colour.

Natalie:  Now here is the example of the word other. See if you can hear the different use of other.

Insert

1. Do you prefer this colour or that colour?
2. I prefer that colour.
3. No I like the other colour.

Natalie:  In the first example the speaker didn't know what colour she wanted the kitchen. She just wanted a different colour. She said 'another colour'.

Jean:  在第一个例句中,说话的人自己还不知道想把厨房粉刷成什么颜色的,她只是想换一种颜色,这是她用到的是  'another colour'.

Natalie:  But in the second example there were two colours to choose from and all the speakers knew what they were. So the speakers could use the definite article 'the'. They said 'the other colour'.

Jean:    在第二个例句中,他们要从两个颜色当中选一个,所以说话的人用到的就是定冠词'the', 所以就是  'the other colour'.

Natalie:  So we use the word other when we want to use the definite article 'the'.

Jean:  当我们需要使用定冠词  the 的时候,我们一般就会用  other.

Natalie:    We also use the word other with plural nouns.

Jean:  我们也可以在 other 后面跟名词的复数形式。

Natalie:  Let's listen to examples of using other with a plural noun.

Insert

1. Have you got any other plans?
2. You should really listen more to other people.

STING

Natalie:  So let's go over what we've learnt today.

Jean:  当我们要形容某物是“额外的”或者“另一个”的单数形式的时候,我们会用 another. Other 也可以用来表示“另一个”的意思。一般来讲,  other 后面跟的时名词复数形式,而当它前面出现定冠词  'the' 的时候,他俩后面既跟单数也可以是复数。

Natalie:  So they are the basic rules for using another and other, but as they are quite common in English there are some exceptions to these rules.

Jean:  这些都是我们在使用  another 和  other 的时候需要掌握的基本规律,不过例外的搭配也是有的,当然这样的例外并不很多,这些呢,大家在字典和语法书籍里都能查得到为数不多的几个不规则搭配。

Natalie:  Well Jean I think it's time you brought out that chocolate cake again, I think we deserve a piece.

Jean:  Oh yes, here it is.

Jean:  I told you I baked it myself didn't I? You have to tell me what you think.

Natalie:  Ok I'll cut the cake.

Natalie:  I've cut two pieces of cake. Would you like this piece or the other piece?

Jean:  Oh no… the other piece…?

Natalie:  Here you go.

Jean:  Mmm. This is delicious, I'm a good cook!

Natalie:  No I don't really like it. Sorry Jean. Did you bake another cake?

Jean:  What?

Natalie:  Only joking, Jean. This is delicious!

Natalie:  Well if you have a question about the English language that you would like an answer to then please email us at questions.chinaelt@bbc.co.uk.

Jean:  Bye!

Natalie:  Bye!
