Last week Li looked at some words related to food and drink that are different in American English and British English.

This week Natalie and Feifei discuss words related to clothes.

It's a fun packed programme as there is even a catwalk in the studio and there are some special models ready to strut their stuff.

Listen out for these words in the programme:

Prince William

Prince William looks good in his waistcoat - or should it be vest?

trainers

pants

vest

wellies

trousers

sneakers

Listen to the programme to find out which are American English and which are British English.

If you have a question you would like to ask our team, email us at questions.chinaelt@bbc.co.uk.

We might make a programme about your question.

Natalie:  Hello everyone and welcome to another Question and Answer of the Week, I'm Natalie.

Natalie:  Today we are following on from last week's programme that our colleague Li did about the differences between some American English and British English words.

Natalie:  Last week Li looked at the different words American and British people use related to food and drink.

Feifei:  So what are we exploring this week Natalie? Exploring 探索。

Natalie:  Well Feifei, this week we are looking at the different words British and Americans use related to clothes.

Feifei:  Ooh clothes! I love clothes!

Natalie:  So I think the only way to teach this is to have a fashion show!

Feifei:  A fashion show 时装秀!

Natalie:  OK Feifei, I will describe what the models are wearing in American English and you have to guess what the equivalent word is in British English.

Oh this is going to be fun!

Natalie:  And I have some special models.

Feifei:  Is that Wang Fei from the China team?

Natalie:  Yes I told you I have some special models. Well first we have Wang Fei in the latest designer sneakers, easy to run in and you will be comfortable in them all year round.

Feifei:  Sneakers. Oh let me think... oh that's trainers.

Natalie:  Correct.

Natalie:  Next we have Diarmuid in a British favourite: galoshes. Also a popular choice with farmers, galoshes keep your feet dry whatever the weather.

Feifei:  Galoshes? Diarmuid looks like a farmer!

Natalie:  This is a hard one. We call them wellington boots or wellies.

Natalie:  Next is Wang Fei again in a stunning vest.

Feifei:  Is that not just a vest in British English?

Natalie:  Well yes we have the word vest in British English, which we use for a piece of clothing we wear under something. A vest in American English is what we call a waistcoat in British English.

Natalie:  And finally here is Diarmuid again wearing the latest on trend pants. Come on out Diarmuid!

Feifei:  Pants! I don't want to see Diarmuid in his pants!

Natalie:  Don't worry Feifei pants in British English may mean underwear but in American English pants means trousers.

Feifei:  Phew. Pants

Natalie:    So Feifei you can see how mixing up some words in British English and American English could be a bit embarrassing!

Feifei:  Yes mixing up pants in British English and American English could definitely be embarrassing,

Natalie:  So here are some examples of the words we have learnt today.

Let's listen to an example of trainers and sneakers.

Insert

A: I love wearing my trainers, they are so comfortable
B: Same here I love my sneakers.

Natalie:  Here is an example of wellington boots and galoshes.

Insert

A: Oh no it's raining. I'd better go get my wellington boots.
B: Yeah, I'll go get my galoshes.

Feifei:    Let's hear another example, this time using the words waistcoat and vest.

Insert

A: Do you like my waistcoat?
B: Yes I like your vest.

Natalie:    And finally here is an example of trousers and pants.

Insert

A: These trousers are great for winter, they always keep me warm.
B: Yeah, those pants look really comfortable as well.

Natalie:  So those were some words related to clothes that are different in American English and British English.

Natalie:  Well if you have a question about the English language that you would like an answer to then please email us at questions.chinaelt@bbc.co.uk.

Oh no, typical British weather. I better go get my wellies on.

Feifei:    I'll go grab my galoshes.

Natalie:    Bye.

Feifei:    Bye.
