听力原文

Jennifer: Hi I’m Jennifer, and welcome to Question and Answer of the week. I’m

joined in the studio today by Helen.

Helen: Hi Jen!

Helen: Whoa, what’s that!?

Jen: Something’s buzzing! I hope it’s not a bee. I’m scared of bees.

Helen: I can hear a buzzing too! 我听到嗡嗡声了,buzz 是昆虫发出的响声。

Jen: There is also another meaning of the word "buzz." This week’s question

has come from Jack. He says: “Today I have watched a video on BBC UK

China. In the video, Usain Bolt says "London is a buzz all around the

world" and I can't figure out what the word "buzz" of this sentence exactly

means – can you explain?”

Helen: An interesting question! Jack 同学来信说他听到单词 buzz 出现在这样的一个句

子里: “London is a buzz all around the world” – 他想知道在这里 buzz 到底是什

么意思。

Jen: Let’s try and clear it up for you! We already know that a buzz is the sound

made by insects or machines. But it can also be used to describe a feeling

of enthusiasm and excitement which is building.

Helen: 虽然 buzz 让我们联想起小昆虫飞来飞去是发出的嗡嗡声,它的另一个含义是指逐渐

形成的热闹和兴奋的气氛。

Jen: For example, when the Olympic Games were in London, there was a real

buzz in the city. That doesn’t mean that there was a loud noise, but that

lots of people were getting excited about it, and talking about it.

Helen: Yes, there was a real buzz in London this summer – 非常热闹和兴奋。许多人

都对奥运的来临感到激动和兴奋, 大家的话题都围绕着奥运。So, in the video that

Jack saw, when Usain Bolt said “London is a buzz all around the world,” it

meant that people are getting excited about London?

Jen: That’s right. Let’s hear some more examples of using the word buzz to

mean “excitement”:

Insert

There’s a real buzz about this new band – I can’t wait to see them perform live.

I think there’s going to be a buzz about this new footballer – I’ve heard he’s very

talented.

Jen: So that’s the noun “buzz,” which means “excitement.” In English, we can

also use the informal adjective “buzzing” to describe a situation which is

lively and where lots of people are enjoying themselves.

Helen: 从 buzz 延伸出来的形容词 buzzing 代表令人高兴激动的情形。

Jen: Let’s hear some examples of that:

Insert

I had a great time last night – the nightclub was absolutely buzzing!

I’ve just come back from a festival. It rained the whole time, but the bands were

buzzing!

Helen: So “buzz” and “buzzing” are two really useful words to describe exciting

and lively situations!

Jen: There’s one last phrase you should know! Buzz off! It’s a slang term which

means “go away!”

Helen: Buzz off. 这个短语的意思可不一样,意思是快走开 go away! These are some

really useful phrases!

Jen: I think there’s definitely a buzz about learning English, too!

Helen: Argh! 我又听到了,嗡嗡声。真讨厌!

Jen: It’s definitely a bee! Get it out of here!

Helen: Why don’t you just buzz off!! 快走开!

Jen: Don’t forget you can email your questions about English to

questions.bosite@tingclass.net – eeeek! Bye!

Helen: I’ll get you! 不想死就快点儿飞出去?Get out of our studio!
