a man of straw: 愿意是指稻草人。放在田间吓鸟的稻草人通常是无效的，因此这个短语用来形容某人无能或软弱，无法自己做决定或容易被他人影响。

think through: 彻底地全面考虑。

an empty shell: 形容某人性格上软弱、虚弱。也可以形容感情上凄凉、空寂。
