Unit 7

Section I

Task 1

Luigi: Did you have fun with Jenny?

Amy: Yeah! We had a great time, especially on Sunday. There was a street fair in her

neighborhood.

Luigi: What was the fair like? Were there a lot of people? Was there any good food?

Amy: It was crowded, but it was fun. The food was great! I had grilled chicken and

potato salad.

Luigi: Was there a raffle?

Amy: No. There wasn’t a raffle. There weren’t any rides, either, but there were some

cool things for sale. I bought a necklace and a tie-dyed T-shirt.

Task 2

Pedro: So, Juan, what are you going to do tomorrow?

Juan: I really want to go for a ride on my new bike. If the weather is nice, I’ll ride in

the park. How about you? Do you have any plans?

Pedro: I’m going to hang out with my cousin, David.

Juan: What are you and David going to do?

Pedro: Well, I’m not sure. It depends on the weather. If it doesn’t rain, we’ll probably

go to the beach.

Juan: And if it rains?

Pedro: We might go to the movies if it rains. Would you like to join us?

Juan: I’d love to. I won’t ride my bike if it rains.

Pedro: Good. But I hope it’s sunny. I really want to go to the beach.

Task 3

Voice-over: The City of London. The heart of the business and financial area.

This is where you'll find lawyers, bankers and stockbrokers.

The City is the original site of what was once Roman London.

It's also referred to as “The Square Mile” because of its size, and its boundaries

have remained almost unchanged since the Middle Ages.

Here's the Bank of England.

And here's Lloyd’s of London, the center of the world's insurance market,

designed by the architect Richard Rogers.

The Gherkin is a recent addition to the London skyline. It's used as offices and

gets its name from its shape.

Leaden hall Market is an example of a Victorian covered market.

It's a popular place for City workers to relax and an interesting place to explore.

In the City the new and ultra-modern sit side by side with the old.

Section II

Task 1

Voice-over: The ceremony of the Changing of the Guard takes place at Buckingham

Palace and at St. James’s Palace in the heart of London.

The “Old Guard” who has been on duty assembles at Buckingham Palace.

The “New Guard” comes from Wellington Barracks, where the soldiers are based.

They slow-march to their signature tune. Present arms.

The two Captains touch left hands, symbolically handing over the keys of the

Palace.

They carry the regimental flag.

Each group will be on guard for twenty-four hours.

Each soldier will be on guard at the sentry box for two hours, and must stay alert

at all times.

As part of the Changing of the Guard, the band plays as entertainment for the

crowd.

Their job done, the “Old Guard” returns to their base at Wellington Barracks,

marching along Birdcage Walk.

Task 2

Charlotte: OK?

Andy: We've got a problem.

Charlotte: What sort? . . . Serious?

Andy: It's my mum's birthday and I'm stuck for a present. Have you got a moment to

help me think of something?

Richard: We can't think of anything.

Charlotte: If you like I could come shopping with you.

Andy: Thanks, let's go right now.

Richard: Good idea but it's a bit late now, the shops are closed.

Charlotte: Alright, there's always tomorrow. Ideas . . . If you haven't got any ideas for

a present why don't you start by thinking about what she likes doing?

Andy: She likes watching TV.

Charlotte: What sort of programs?

Andy: Cookery programs.

Richard: A cookbook then!

Charlotte: Isn't that a good idea?

Andy: She's a bit of a rubbish cook.

Charlotte: Oh . . . Well it could be just what she needs. What about some chocolates?

Andy: That's a better idea.

Richard: Are you sure? Didn't you say she was on a diet.

Andy: Oh, yeah . . . Look, I'm getting desperate.

Charlotte: I think we are, too. OK, does she read, knit, go on walking holidays, climb

mountains?

Andy: Be serious, she hardly leaves the house.

Richard: OK, then, well, uh, why don't we get her an exercise bike? Or, um something

exciting like a, hot air balloon trip?

Charlotte: Oh, please, Richard!

Richard: Sorry, alright, how about what I got my mum last birthday off the Internet?

Charlotte: What was that?

Richard: It was a large bouquet of flowers and a bottle of champagne.

Andy: Brilliant!

Charlotte: Where's the card? Maybe we could all sign it . . .

Richard: Good idea. Yes, when is her birthday anyway?

Charlotte: What's wrong?

Richard: Is there a problem?

Charlotte: We don't have to sign it.

Andy: That’s the thing. Er, her birthday was yesterday.

Richard: Yesterday?

Charlotte: No!

Andy: I could always blame the card on the post.

Charlotte: I'd get onto the Internet right away . . . Order those flowers now.
