① only doing sth.放在句尾，表示方式、状况或结果，only 表示强调。

She died，only leaving nothing but debts. 她死了，只留下一身债。

He started off in a hurry，only leaving a lot of work undone. 他匆忙走了，留下许多工作未做。

② only to do sth.放在句尾，作结果状语，表示没有预料的结果，有时含有某种感情色彩。

The thief ran into the wood only to be caught by a passerby. 小偷跑进了树林，想不到被一个过路人抓住了。
