做一件真正爱的事情

有很多人问我, 如何平衡写作, 工作和生活? 这个问题如何回答呢? 从2002年决定正式写作开始, 生活就不仅仅是生活, 而是一种观察, 一种积累, 一种体会. 对我来说, 保持工作, 和各种不同的人交往, 听他们对事业的追求, 对爱情的苦恼, 对生活的感悟, 都是为了写作.

Many people have asked me how to balance writing, work and life. How am I supposed to make an answer? Since I was determined to pick up my pen in 2002, life, to me, is not merely life itself but an observation, an accumulation and an experience. For me, all, including doing my work, interacting with different people by listening to their strives for their career, their puzzlement about love and their perception about life, are for writing.

人生非常有限, 很多人只能过一种人生. 而我能借助写作, 超越了这个界限, 并且可以借助文字与人们分享. 我很感谢命运. 我很想说, 真正的工作, 就是每周那几个小时的创作. 但是, 我每时每刻, 都在为那几个小时的创作付出努力. 古人说, 功夫在诗外, 就是这个道理.

Life is too short and many of us can only live a certain life. But for me, I can go beyond this boundary relying on writing and share with people my feelings by words. I feel pretty grateful to my destiny and am eager to say that my real work is the few precious hours’ writing every week. However, I am sparing no effort in preparation for it every second. It was once said by our ancestors that the real kung fu is beyond books, and that is what I am saying now.

对很多人来说, 当一个作家似乎是很风情的事情, 比如泡咖啡馆, 比如惊天动地的爱情. 这只是一种作家的生活. 作家生活和作家, 是两件事情. 真正的创作, 意味着艰苦的训练, 日复一日, 年复一年; 意味着你要找到更多的角度, 用更多的理解力和想象力, 去看待生活与世界; 意味着不断挑战自我, 不理会他人的嘲笑与不解. 在这个过程中, 没有人分享, 也没有人能给你真正的支持. 于是, 这意味着孤独, 终其一生的孤独.

For many people, being a writer seems to be a romantic job, something like hanging over the coffee shop, or fabricating a sensational love story. But here I want to clarify that it is only a kind of life for certain writers. Being a writer and living a writer’s life are two different things. The real writing refers to harsh day-after-day and year-after-year training. It requires you to seek out more angles and leverage your comprehension ability and imagination to observe our lives and world. It also means unceasing self-challenging and ignorance of others’ ridicule and disagreement. Through it all, no one would share with and stand by you. Then, it means loneliness, lifelong loneliness.

听起来很苦的事情, 为什么还要做? 因为创作的趣味实在太大了. 当我把无变成有, 把无生命的东西变成有生命价值的作品, 我就觉得乐在其中.

So why do I still insist on writing should it sound so tough? It is because writing can generate a priceless feeling for me. When I create something out of nothing, or turn something lifeless into something of great value to our lives with my pen, I feel on top of the world in my heart.

能乐在其中, 便能苦中作乐. 这种乐趣, 是一切成功无法代替的. 做真正爱的事情, 爱真正爱的人, 便可以超越自我, 超越苦难. 很多人喜欢问, 怎么样做事才能获得成功. 其实人们可以问问自己, 是否真正爱做这个事情, 哪怕付出再多也无所畏惧, 并且觉得, 成功了固然可喜, 失败了也是一种收获?

Only when you truly love the thing you do can you do it delightedly out of bitterness. It is an irreplaceable pleasure. When you are engaging in what you truly like and loving who you truly love, you can surpass yourself and overcome all sorts of hardships. Many people would like to ask how they can make a success. Actually we can ask ourselves first whether we truly love what we are doing at hand, whether we can pay all what we have without any shrinks so as to succeed, and more importantly, whether we can deem success a pleasure and failure a harvest.
