"One cold, bleak night,
“一个寒冷而萧瑟的夜晚，
the snow fell fast,
雪下得很大，
and the wind blew loud and shrill.
大风呼啸而过。
It was quite dark.
外面一片漆黑，
Not a star was to be seen in the sky.
天空连一颗星星都看不到。”
"These good men sent out a dog,
“这些善良的人们把一条狗放了出去，
to hunt for those who might want help.
用来寻找可能需要帮助的人。
In an hour or two, the dog was heard coming back.
一两个小时后，这条狗就会回来。”
"On looking out, they saw him with a boy on his back.
“向外望的时候，他们看到它的背上有一个男孩。
The poor child was stiff with cold.
这个可怜的孩子被冻僵了，
He could but just hold on to the dog's back.
他只能趴在狗背上，动弹不得。”
"He had lain for a long time in the snow,
“他已经在雪里躺了很长时间，
and was too weak to walk.
虚弱得无法走路。”
"He felt something pull him by the coat,
“他感觉到有东西在拉他的大衣，
and heard the bark of a dog.
还听到了狗的叫声。
He put out his hand, and felt the dog.
他伸出手，摸了摸这只狗。
The dog gave him another pull.
狗又拉了拉他。”
"This gave the poor boy some hope,
“这一拉给这个可怜的男孩带来了一些希望。
and he took hold of the dog.
他抓住了狗，
He drew himself out of the snow,
把自己从雪堆里拉了出来。
but he could not stand or walk.
但他已经不能走路，甚至站不起来了。”
"He got on the dog's back,
“他趴在了狗背上，
and put his arms round the dog's neck, and held on.
用胳膊围在狗脖子上抓住它。
He felt sure that the dog did not mean to do him any harm.
他肯定这只狗不会对他造成任何伤害。”
"Thus he rode all the way to the good men's house.
“他趴了一路，终于到达了善良人们的家。”
"They took care of him, till the snow was gone.
“他们一直照顾他，直到雪停，
Then they sent him to his home."
然后把他送回了家。”
