Thus he was unhappy in school and out of school.

There is nothing which makes a person enjoy play so well as to study hard.

When recess was over, and the rest of the boys returned, fresh and vigorous, to their studies,
课间休息结束，其他的男孩子都精神饱满，活力无限地回去继续学习，
George might be seen lagging and moping along to his seat.
而乔治总是走得很慢，磨磨蹭蹭地回到他的座位上。
Sometimes he would be asleep in school;
有时候他会在课堂上睡觉；
sometimes he would pass his time in catching flies, and penning them up in little holes, which he cut in his seat;
有时候他会用抓苍蝇来打发时间，然后把它们关在他在椅子上刻出的小洞里。
and sometimes, when the preceptor's back was turned, he would throw a paper ball across the room.
还有些时候，当老师转过身去，他会把一个纸团扔到教室的另一边。
When the class was called up to recite,
当老师叫同学们背诵时，
George would come drowsily along, looking as mean and ashamed as though he were going to be whipped.
乔治总是迷迷糊糊地跟着，看上去非常差劲，令人惭愧，仿佛要挨鞭子似的。
The rest of the class stepped up to the recitation with alaCRIty, and appeared happy and contented.
其他同学加快了背诵的速度，看起来非常愉快，让人满意。
When it came George's turn to recite, he would be so long in doing it,
当轮到乔治背诵时，他要花上很长时间，
and make such blunders, that all most heartily wished him out of the class.
犯很多错，以至于所有人都由衷地希望把他赶出教室。
At last, George went with his class to enter college.
最终，乔治和他的同学们一起进入了大学。
Though he passed a very poor examination, he was admitted with the rest;
尽管他的考试成绩很差，但他也和其他同学一起被录取了。
for those who examined him thought it was possible that the reason why he did not answer questions better was because he was frightened.
原因是那个考察他的老师认为，他没回答好问题可能是因为他太害怕，太紧张了。
Now came hard times for poor George.

In college there is not much mercy shown to bad scholars;
大学里对于差学生可没那么仁慈了。
and George had neglected his studies so long that he could not now keep up with his class, let him try ever so hard.
乔治放松学习的时间太长，所以他已经跟不上上课进度了，让他更努力地试试吧。
