I've wandered to the village, Tom,
汤姆，我在村里徘徊，
I've sat beneath the tree,
在那棵树底坐下，
Upon the schoolhouse playground that sheltered you and me;
当年你我遮阴的地方，紧挨着校园操场。
But none were left to greet me, Tom,
汤姆，没有故人前来问候，
And few were left to know,
几乎无人知道，
Who played with me upon the green,
谁和我，在草地上玩耍，
Just forty years ago.
四十年前，往事历历在目。
The grass was just as green, Tom,
汤姆，草地翠绿一如往昔，
Barefooted boys at play
孩子们赤脚地追逐游戏，
Were sporting, just as we did then,
与当年我们同样神气，
With spirits just as gay.
兴高采烈，笑声清澈无比。
But the master sleeps upon the hill,
老师在山上睡觉，
Which, coated o'er with snow,
坡上覆满了雪，他为学生，
Afforded us a sliding place,
准备好滑雪玩耍之地，
Some forty years ago.
大约四十年前，久远记忆。
The old schoolhouse is altered some;
破旧的校舍，变化不大，
The benches are replaced by new ones very like the same our jackknives had defaced.
从前桌凳，都已置换，新的旧的，看来相差无几，我们口袋小刀，刻坏不少桌椅。
But the same old bricks are in the wall,
陈年老砖，斑驳写在墙上，
The bell swings to and fro;
校园晨钟，还在风中摇晃，
Its music's just the same, dear Tom,
铃声叮当，仍然清脆无比，
T was forty years ago.
汤姆呵，四十年光阴摇碎。
