1. give sb. the eye ** (有好感而)盯着某人看,送秋波

解 〈口〉习语;词义溯源:给某人[视线、眼光(eye)];参照catch one's eye

例 We had been sitting in the rock café giving every girl the eye for over an hour when this huge man came over and asked us why we were staring at his girlfriend.

2. give sb. the shirt off one's back ** 把什么都给出去;非常慈悲

解 习语;词义溯源:把身上穿着的衬衫[脱下来(off)]给某人

例 You know I'd give the shirt off my back for you, Su Yun, but I just don't have any money right now. My situation's as bad as yours. Have you tried asking Yu Lin? He might be able to lend you some money.

3. give sb. tit for tat ** 用同样的方式报复,以牙还牙

解 〈口〉习语;词义溯源:给某人[一报还一报(tit for tat)];tit表示“敲打”,tat表示“轻轻敲打”

例 I sat there watching two little boys throwing sand at each other with amusement. One boy was the aggressor and the other was just giving him tit for tat. A few minutes later, their mother came along and cleaned them off in the ocean water.

4. give sb. a black eye ** 打得某人眼眶发青;损坏名声

解 习语;词义溯源:给某人带来[被打得发青的眼圈、丑事(black eye)];参照get a black eye

例 I gave him a black eye!He'll have to walk around for days with that big bruise on his eye and everybody will ask him how he got it. He'll lie and tell them he had an accident. He won't tell them I got the better of him.

5. give sb. a bright idea ** 告诉某人好主意或好方案

解 习语;词义溯源:告诉某人[好主意、好方案(bright idea)]

例 Joe likes to read magazines and newspapers from around the world. He says that every so often, something he reads gives him a bright idea. I guess that's why he's so creative in advertising.
