1. look down on sb. or sth. / look down one's nose at sb. or sth. *** 俯视;看不起,蔑视

例 Americans tend to have a prejudice for things American. If it's not American, they are suspicious of it, look down on it or just ignore it all together. “It's a kind of cultural arrogance,” says Dr. Harriette Thorngood, a sociology professor at the University of California Berkeley. “And it conflicts with the image the world abroad has of American as being open-minded. ”
