1. make a long story short **

解 习语;词义溯源:把[较长的故事(a long story)]变成[短的(short)];一般用to...

I told Shilling that I couldn't come to the restaurant to help him as I had my hands tied by obligations at the office. Then ten minutes later my mother called me starting giving me hell for not helping out enough with the family restaurant. Well, to make a long story short, I no longer live at home and haven't talked to anybody from the family since that night.

2. make a mess of sth. / make a mess **

Needless to say this has made a mess of our family's plans for the Mid-autumn Festival. Everybody was supposed to meet at my house this year. But since we're not talking to each other, I guess my mother will tell everybody to go home again like last year. They certainly can't meet at Shilling's tiny apartment.

3. make a mountain out of a molehill **

I don't feel the least bit guilty about this. It never would have happened if my mother hadn't made a mountain out of what was truly only a molehill. I was busy and couldn't help them that night and she made a big deal out of it, accusing me of not caring about the family. She went too far .

4. make a name for oneself / make a name **

She ought to know that I'm quite busy these days trying to manage my advertising company. In the advertising world the only way to make a name for yourself is through contacts. You have to meet people—so that means a lot of late night dinners. I can't just drop that and go to my family's restaurant every time they need a little help. Mother should realize that.

5. make a pass at sb. **

解 习语;词义溯源:向某人做出[搭讪、求爱(pass)];参照make a play for sb.

例 Why don't you stop trying to give that girl the eye and be brave enough to go over there and make a pass at her before somebody else does?
