The Grant Museum of Zoology

The Grant Museum of Zoology in London has one of the world's most impressive collections of ancient animals. One of them is this, a quagga.

It was only in the 1970s they finally realize in fact it was a different animal. But at that point, they realize they had to lend the leg out to various researchers, and that leg hadn't come back.

Fast forward forty years, and it's only now that they're able to use modern technology, mainly 3D printing, to reproduce an exact replica of the leg.

3D printing in museums is definitely going to be a big part of the future.I think there are plenty of objects that are incomplete.

The British Museum

The British Museum opened in 1753 and was the world's first national public museum.Just in 250 years, it had to be constantly innovative in its approach. And in the 21st century, that museum is using cutting-edge technology to amplify what it does, and engage users.

The museum is unveiled a virtual reality experience, where visitors can explore some of its Bronze Age collection in its natural context.

I think virtual reality has a specific role to help people understand objects in the original context.

The Natural History Museum

The VR technology is also being used at the Natural History Museum to bring sea creatures to life from 500 million years ago.

The nice thing about First Life is that you can see the fossils upon which the virtual reality experience is based, but still get through virtual reality a wonderful evocation of what these animals look like in life.

At the moment, we're using headsets and proprietary smartphones supplied to our visitors.Ultimately, the best experience will be having something that we've worked across a multitude of platforms delivered to people's own devices.

Metropolitan Museum of Art

There was worry across all cultural institutions that if you put too many photographs out in the world, then people wouldn't want to come to see the real thing. The virtual would trump the physical.

I think it's the exact opposite. The more people see something, the more they want to go to see it in person.People are in a digital world, but they really love physical experiences.

We're trying to make virtual a circle. We want the digital experience to be so fantastic that people want to come in person. And then once people come in person, we want them to love everything they see, so that then they want to share with their friends around the world.

We have launched an app for folks who are interested in the museum. We still have the regular audio guide, but we've put the contents of the audio guide on the internet.
