God Cupid's shaft, like destiny,

What fools are they that have not known
That love likes no laws but his own?
My songs they be of Cynthia's praise,
I wear her rings on holy-days,
On every tree I write her name,
And every day I read the same.
Where Honor Cupid's rival is,
There miracles are seen of his.
If Cynthia crave her ring of me,
I blot her name out of the tree.
If doubt do darken things held clear,
Then well fare nothing once a year.
For many run, but one must win;
Fools only hedge the cuckoo in.
The worth that worthiness should move
Is lore, which is the due of love.
And love as well the sllepherd can

[1]此诗创作于1600年，原文Cynthia又可译成“铿提亚”，传说勒托在得罗斯岛的铿托斯山上生下阿波罗和阿耳忒弥斯（即狄安娜），这个名字由此而来。
[2]伏尔克·格雷维尔（Fulke Greville，1554—1628），诗人、散文家。毕业于剑桥大学基督学院，做过宫廷官员，1621年封爵。与锡德尼私交甚笃，著有《锡德尼爵士的一生》。诗歌代表作是《玛斯塔佛》。
