As a French player, but striker Andre-Pierre Gignac surprised when he supported Argentina to win the 2022 World Cup.

“In Argentina, people want the team to win the World Cup because of Lionel Messi. I'm French but would love to see Messi lift the world cup. He deserves it because of what he has done in his entire career," FOX Sports quoted Gignac.

Gignac added that he would pick Kylian Mbappe into the starting XI if he could act as a coach. However, the Tigres striker prefers to partner with Messi: "He still has a lot of magic with his feet".

Gignac, 37 years old, currently plays for Tigres club in the Mexican league. He was a familiar member of France's squad for the 2010 World Cup and Euro 2016. The former Marseille striker scored 7 goals in 36 appearances for the national team.

Messi is being appreciated before the final. The 35-year-old star has scored 5 goals and has 3 assists since the beginning of the tournament.

“I expect that Messi will have composure in the game. He's performing like a 20-year-old on the pitch," said Argentina legend Gabriel Batistuta. "Messi is very hungry and came here to win the cup. That is exactly what football needs, Leo is fueling the whole team."

Meanwhile, France coach, Didier Deschamps, expressed concern when talking about Messi before the final. “Four years ago, we expected Messi to play more to the right, but he plays as a back striker. Now, Messi plays the role of a playmaker. He plays freely and so it is difficult to follow Messi. Unless Messi is sick, we don't know. Of course I don't wish that would happen to him. Messi is very fit now," coach Deschamps said.

The World Cup final between Argentina and France will take place at Lusail Stadium at 11pm on December 18 .
