The Opium Wars were the two wars fought between China and Britain in the mid-1800s over their long-standing dispute on diplomatic relations, trade, etc. In the second Opium War, France fought alongside Britain to invade China. The dispute centered around the import of British India-grown opium into China. The Qing emperor (Dao Guang) banned opium in China and pointed out its harm on health and societal productivity. The British Empire, while also banning opium consumption within her border, saw no problem exporting opium for profit. The Opium Wars and the unequal treaties signed afterwards partly led to the downfall of the Qing Empire, as many countries followed suit and imposed unequal terms of trade on China.
