唐诗

唐诗主题广泛，有的从侧面反映阶级冲突，揭露封建社会的黑暗；有的歌颂正义战争，抒发爱国思想；有的描绘祖国河山的秀丽多娇；有的表达个人对友谊、爱情、志向和生活的情感。总而言之，从自然现象、政治事件、生活劳作、社会风习 （ethos）到个人感受，都逃不过诗人敏锐的目光，成为他们写作的题材。在创作风格上，既有现实主义，又有浪漫主义，而大部分伟大的诗歌是二者兼有。虽然唐诗创作于1000多年前，但许多唐诗现今仍广为流传，给中国文学以及中华民族的品格带来了深远影响。

翻译点拨

1. 从侧面反映：“从侧面”意为“不直接地”，因此可译为indirectly，“反映”可译为reflect。

2. 有的……有的……有的……：与中文排比对应，英文也采用排比句式，这三个排比句式都采用由which引导的定语从句。

3. 歌颂：可以翻译为praise，也可采用词组sing the praises of。

4. 自然现象、政治事件、生活劳作、社会风习：中文中多用四字格，在翻译的时候多数情况下无法找到对等的表达，此时只要把意思表达清楚即可。

5. 广为流传：可译为widely circulated。circulate为动词，意为“流传，传播”。

Tang Poetry

Tang poetry covers a wide range of topics, some of which indirectly reflect class conflicts to expose the darkness of the feudal society, some of which sing the praises of just wars and express patriotism, some of which depict the beautiful rivers and mountains in the country, and some of which convey personal emotions about friendship, love, ambitions and life. In short, natural phenomena, political events, life and work, social ethos and personal feelings are all captured by acute eyes of poets. As to the writing styles, there are both realism and romanticism, and most of the great poems embody both. Though created over 1,000 years ago, many of the Tang poems are still widely circulated today, exerting a far-reaching influence on Chinese literature and the characters of the Chinese nation.

唐诗按照其发展大体可以分为初唐、盛唐、中唐和晚唐四个时期。初唐的代表作家是“初唐四杰”——王勃、杨炯、卢照邻、骆宾王。到了盛唐，唐诗发展至顶峰时期，伟大的浪漫主义诗人李白和伟大的现实主义诗人杜甫，即是这一时期最杰出的代表。另有王维、孟浩然代表田园诗派和高适、岑参代表边塞诗派。在中唐时期，诗人各有成就，但成绩最卓著的要数白居易，他提出“文章合为时而著，歌诗合为事而作”（articles should be for the times, poems should be for current affairs）的进步理论主张，并亲自参加领导“新乐府运动”。白居易的诗明白晓畅，通俗易懂，深受群众喜爱。晚唐诗人较著名的有：温庭筠、李商隐、杜牧、韦庄等。其中，李商隐和杜牧被人们称为“小李杜”。
