二、介词短语的句法作用

1.作定语

This is his reply to your letter.这是他给你的回信。

This is the best way of doing it.这是做此事最好的方法。

My love for you is deeper than the sea.我对你的爱比海深。

The girl in red is my sister.穿红衣的那个女孩是我妹妹。

【提示】 介词短语作定语总是置于它所修饰的名词后面。

2.作状语

We live in Hangzhou.我们住在杭州。（地点状语）

She got here at four.她是4点到这儿的。（时间状语）

They came here by train.他们乘火车来这儿。（方式状语）

The game was postponed because of rain.因为下雨运动会被推迟了。（原因状语）

There will be no living things without water.没有水就没有生物。（条件状语）

He ran for shelter.他跑去避雨。（目的状语）

They play football in spite of the rain.他们冒雨踢足球。（让步状语）

To what extent would you trust them？ 你在多大程度上信任他们？（程度状语）

3.作表语

He was with a friend.他和一个朋友在一起。

Health is above wealth.健康胜过财富。

This knife is for cutting bread.这把小刀是用于切面包的。

He’s in the office.他在办公室。

4.作宾语补足语

I always find her at her studies.我经常发现她在学习。

I found everything in good condition.我发现一切正常。

Her illness kept her in bed for a week.她因生病在床上躺了一星期。

He was regarded as a hero.他被看成是英雄。（主语补足语）

5.作介词宾语

（1）from+介词短语

Come out from under the table.从桌子下面出来。

He walked out from among the crowd.他从人群中走出来。

I saw her from across the street.我从街对面望见了她。

She had no sooner opened the door than a cat jumped out from behind the door.

她刚把门打开，一只猫就从门后跳了出来。

（2）until+介词短语

She won’t go home until after the exam.她要考完试之后再回家。

She’s worked as a nurse until past her sixtieth birthday.

她一直到60岁都是护士。

（3）except+介词短语

No admittance except on business.闲人莫入。

He cannot spare any time except on Sunday.除星期日外，他抽不出时间。

The window is never opened except in summer.除夏天外，这扇窗户从不打开。

Steel pennies are scarce now except in coin shops.

除了在钱币店内，钢币便士现在很难见到了。
